Williams, Senese combine for four hits and five runs in EC freshman win over Newnan

SHARPSBURG-Dekel Williams and Nico Senese had four hits and five runs Monday evening to help lead the East Coweta Indians to a 9-6 victory over the Newnan Cougars in a freshman baseball game.
The win improved the Indians' record to 0-1 as they return the field Tuesday evening to face the Whitewater Wildcats.
The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Cougars' starter Phillip Spencer as Senese came home on a force play and Quinlan WIley followed him home on an infield error on the play.
Adrian Roman was the beneficiary of the lead for EC as he was on his way to a solid start through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the top of the fourth inning as Newnan came back to take the lead.
Yates Kelleher led off with a single while Spencer and AJ Carter followed with walks that loaded the bases for Gage Rowe.
Rowe tied the game at 2-2 as he hit a two-run single with Carter taking second on the play and both advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Reid Brass.
With Jon Jarrard at bat, Carter was able to come home on a wild pitch to give the Cougars a 3-2 and eventually Roman was replaced on the mound by Trey Jones who recorded a strikeout and induced a ground ball to first.
The Indians tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the as Kaleb Gardner reached on a one out single and advanced around the bases on a wild pitch and passed ball before scoring when Craig Newlands grounded out to second.
However, Newnan reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning as Brysen Duncan and Kelleher reached on singles and after the first out of the frame Carter reached on a walk that loaded the bases
After Rowe was retired on a pop to WIley at third, Brass reached on a walk that allowed Duncan to come home with the lead run.
The Indians rallied in the bottom of the frame as Charlie Paige and Williams reached on consecutive one out singles.
With Paige on third, Williams stole second to put runners in scoring position for Senese who hit a ground ball to third.
Paige was able to tie the game at 4-4 as the throw was wide and Williams was able to advance to third on the play.
Senese advanced to second as Wiley was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Ryan Barber.
Barber responded with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Williams with the go ahead run that gave EC a 5-4 lead.
An error allowed Senese to come home from third for another run and a 6-4 lead.
Newnan was not going away in the top of the sixth as Denzel Boston reached on an infield error and stole second before advancing to third on a flyball and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Duncan.
The Indians responded in the bottom of the inning as Zach Carlton reached on a walk and Williams followed one out single that moved the former to third.
Senese followed with a two run single to center field and the young shortstop was able to move to second on an error and eventually move to third on a wild pitch and score as a throwing error by the catcher went into left field.
The Cougars cut the deficit to 9-6 in the top of the seventh inning as Brass reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a walk to Jarrard and was awarded third on a balk before coming home on a wild pitch.
The Cougars were unable to get closer as Andrew Martin, the third Indians pitcher of the game, was able to end the game with a strikeout.

SHARPSBURG-Steady pitching by Keegan Rich, Landon Underhill and Quinlan WIley led the East Coweta Indians to an 8-1 victory over the McIntosh Chiefs in a junior varsity baseball game played  Wednesday evening.
The win improved the Indians record to 4-2 as they prepare to host the Sandy Creek Patriots in a Thursday evening game starting at 5:30.
The Indians took control early as they scored a run in the bottom of the first inning.
With one out, Ashton Deloach was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring from third as Rich grounded out to second base.
The Indians added a run in the bottom of the second inning as Jacob Howell reached on a leadoff single and moved around the bases courtesy of a pair of wild pitches before coming home when Tanner Floyd's groundball was mishandled.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Indians had a chance to add to the lead as Nico Senese walked and Rich followed with an infield single but it appeared they would be stranded as Chiefs' starter Jacob Woods retired the next two batters on called third strikes.
However, EC was able to score as Howell followed with a walk and after Senese was able to score on a wild pitch Jacob Burgess reached on an infield error and Floyd reached on a walk that allowed Rich to score and the lead was 4-0.
After pitching three innings in which he allowed one hit and three walks while recording six strikeouts, Rich was lifted in favor of Landon Underhill.
The Indians scored twice in the bottom of the fourth as Deloach reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before coming home on the from end of a double steal that saw Rich go to second.
Wiley delivered the second run of the frame as his single to right field brought Rich home to give the home team a 6-0 cushion.
The Indians added a run with two outs in the bottom of the frame as Floyd was hit by a pitch and eventually came home on a single by Senese.
The final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning as Devin Holmes reached on a leadoff single, advanced to second on an error and was awarded third on a balk before coming home on a wild pitch.
Meanwhile, Underhill proved effective as he recorded five infield outs in his first two innings of work but experienced problems in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out.
However, Underhill showed mental toughness as he retired two batters on strikeouts and ended the frame with a flyball to Senese in center field.
Wiley took over in the top of the seventh inning and allowed the only Chiefs' run of the night as Blake Summers reached on a leadoff double and come home on a one out single by Woods.
Wiley managed to get a force play at second and a groundout to third to end the game.

Chiefs victimized by errors as Indians JV win in five innings

in a five-inning affair in Sharpsburg on Tuesday evening.

SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Indians took advantage of seven errors Tuesday as they defeated the McIntosh Chiefs 10-0 in a five inning Junior Varsity game.
By virtue of the win, the Indians improved to 3-2 on the season as they will face the Chiefs in Peachtree City on Wednesday depending on the weather.
The Chiefs had a chance to get on the board early as Yuki Tumara and Landon Pope reached on consecutive one out singles in the top of the first inning, but Indians starter William Tansey left them stranded after a pair of strikeouts.
In the bottom of the second inning in Thomas was retired on a str, the Indians had a chance to get on the board as Ashton DeLoach was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Levi Wilson.
With one out, Devin Thomas was retired on a strikeout but a wild pitch on strike three allowed DeLoach to score as Thomas was thrown out at first.
Errors were the feature of the bottom of the third inning as the Indians scored five runs to take a 6-0 lead.
Landon Underhill reached on a walk and stole second before coming home on a single by Quinlan Wiley who advanced to second as JJ Freed walked and moved to third after Jordan Kenty walked.
Wilson hit a groundball to second and was called out at first as Wiley scored on the play and the other runners moved a base.
With Holmes at the plate, the errors began for the Chiefs as three consecutive errors allowed Freed, courtesy runner Kaleb Gardner and Thomas to come home before an infield fly ended the frame.
The Indians added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Freed reached on a one out walk and took third when a ball hit Kenty was mishandled before coming home on a single to right field by Wilson.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Indians were able to put the game away as Holmes reached on a single, stole second and scored on an error with two outs in the frame.
Underhill and Wiley reached on errors with the former coming home and Freed was walked before coming home on a game ending single by Kenty.
Tansey scattered five hits over three and one-third innings and recorded five strikeouts before he was relieved by Daniel Smith who retired three of the five batters he faced by strikeout and recording an assist from another batter. 

Jones, Newlands lead the way to game one win while baserunning miscues led to game two win

SHARPSBURG-The Northgate Vikings literally ran themselves into bad luck Friday as two running miscues led to outs in the top of the fifth inning as they were defeated 4-3 by the East Coweta Indians in the second of a freshmen doubleheader.
The win improved the Indians' record to 7-1 and gave them a sweep for the day as they were 12-1 winners in the opener.

Trailing 2-0, the Vikings had two runners on base, a pitch hit the ground and the runner on second took off for third only to be met by EC third baseman Trey Jones who applied the tag after taking a throw from catcher Ben Brisky.
Blake Glancy moved to third after a double by Joshua Tate and was able to score on a wild pitch.
An error allowed Tate to score and Jak Everett to reach base and the Vikings had cut the deficit to a lone run.
With Calvin Baker at the plate at the plate, Everett was able to steal second base and after a pitch hit the ground, tried to advance to third but Brisky threw to Craig Newlands at third and Everett was tagged out.
Baker reached on a walk from Ethan Leonard, but the latter was able to record a save as Kameron Alpough fouled off a pitch that was headed toward the EC dugout and Newlands made the third out when he caught the ball before it went out of play.
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Charlie Dewey walked, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball as Glancy walked.

Then as a batter, Jones had a third inning double that
led to the first run of the opening game and an RBI single
in the fourth inning.

A double steal allowed Dewey to come home and Glancy was able to reach second and eventually third but was left stranded as EC starter Ryan Barber recorded three strikeouts.
The lead didn't last long as the entire batting order went to the plate for the Indians and three batters came home.
Dekel Williams and Charlie Paige opened the frame by reaching on walks and Barber was awarded first In a catcher's interference call that loaded the bases.
Leonard reached on a fielder's choice as courtesy runner Nico Senese was retired at second but on the play, Williams came home with the tying run.
A walk to Brisky reloaded the bases for Zack Carlton who was hit by a pitch that allowed Paige to score and give EC a 2-1 lead.
Denver Watson followed by reaching on a walk that scored Leonard and a pitching change was made that eventually ended the inning as Everett recorded a strikeout and pop fly.
The Indians added an important run in the bottom of the third inning as Carlton reached on a one out walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.
Watson was hit by a pitch and as he attempted to steal second, a balk was called and Carlton was awarded home to give EC a 4-1 lead.
Barber pitched the first three innings of the game and didn't allow a hit during the stint and recorded six strikeouts.
Watson took over in the fourth allowing four hits and recording three strikeouts before yielding to Leonard who recorded the save.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the two teams were scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when 10 batters went to the plate for the Indians and six came home.
Jones led off with a double and Williams followed by reaching on a walk but the next two batters were retired on a strikeout and a pop fly.
However, Barber was hit by a pitch to load the bases and courtesy runner Jacob Medina was able to score as a wild pitch was tossed by Dewey who was starting the game for the Vikings.
Walks to Kaleb Gardner and Austin Black scored Williams to increase the lead to 2-0 and a pitching change was made.
After the change, Kaleb Carey reached on bases loaded walk that scored Barber and Newlands ended the scoring with a shot into right center field that resulted in a bases clearing double.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Indians added to their lead as 11 batters came to the plate and six more scored.
Paige singled to start the frame and a pitching change followed as well as a walk to Senese, Barber hit by a pitch for the third time to load the bases and a two-run single by Gardner.
A walk to Black loaded the bases and after Carey was hit by a pitch, Barber came home and the lead was 9-0.
Gardner gave EC a 10-0 lead as Newlands grounded out to shortstop and Jones, who started the opening game on the mound, aided his own cause with a run scoring single.t
Carey came home with the final run of the game for the Indians when Paige hit a single to left field.
After a solid four innings, Jones was replaced on the mound in the top of the fifth inning by Andrew Martin who had a strong start against Ola on Wednesday.
Martin appeared to be on his way to duplicating that effort as he retired the first two batters of the frame.
However, Martin struggled as the next four batters reached including Jackson Butz who had an RBI single that kept Northgate from being shutout.
Martin recovered and kept the Vikings from having a big rally by recording a strikeout that ended the game.

EC freshmen sweep Mustangs in doubleheader

SHARPSBURG-Fans looking for an entertaining way to end a baseball game had to look no further than the second game of a Wednesday freshman doubleheader between the East Coweta Indians and the Ola Mustangs.

What appeared to be a walk to load the bases for the Mustangs with two outs in the top of the fifth turned out be something different as the entire Indians infield executed a rundown of a baserunner to preserve a 2-1 win and a sweep of the twin bill.

The Indians, now 5-1 on the young season, began the day with a 5-0 victory as Adrian Roman and Trey Jones combined for a three-hitter.

In the opener, the Mustangs threatened to take the lead in the top of the second inning with two base runners and two outs when starting pitcher Kameron Laine singled to right field.

Holland was sent home on the play but Indians right fielder Dekel Williams threw a strike to Ryan Barber behind the plate and the third out was recorded to keep the run off the board.

The Indians responded after two outs in the bottom of the frame with three runs to take the lead they would never give up.

Ben Brisky led off the inning by reaching first base after being hit by a pitch and Kaleb Carey reached on a single.

Following the Carey single, Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

A strikeout was recorded then Charlie Paige hit a line drive down the first base line which allowed Brisky to score and Carey to advance to third as the out at first was being recorded.

A single by Nico Senese gave EC a 2-0 lead as Carey was crossed home plate and the final run of the inning came home as the result of a balk call that allowed Jones to score.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Indians added to their lead as Kaleb Gardner led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Brisky who stole second while Carey was at the plate.

Carey lined a shot off of the pitching hand of Laine and the ball rolled toward the shortstop who threw the ball past the first baseman.

On the play, Gardner and Brisky came home while Laine came out as he was in pain after the liner.

The lead was more than enough for Roman who allowed three hits in the second inning but was excellent in his four inning stint on the mound as he recorded seven strikeouts and allowed two walks.

Roman was relieved by Jones in the top of the fifth and after a walk to the leadoff batter was able to get out the inning and end the game with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout.

In the second game, the two teams were scoreless until there were two outs in the bottom of the third inning when Denver Watson reached first after a third strikeout was mishandled and Williams reached on a double that advanced Watson to third.

Senese, who was the starting pitcher in game two, aided his own cause as lined a double inside the third base line allowing Watson and Williams to come home.

The second run proved to be important as the Mustangs tried to rally in the top of the fourth inning.

After a double play was turned in the frame, Senese surrendered a single to Jack Robinson and the former was replaced on the mound by Zach Carlton.

In three and two-third innings, Senese allowed four hits and recorded four strikeouts.

Robinson moved to second on a passed ball and cut the margin to 2-1 as Talon Holland reached on an RBI single.

Cochran was able to record the third out of the inning and got through the top of the fifth inning as he retired the first two batters on groundouts.

However, the game was far from over as Hunter Basko reached on an error and Jackson Owens followed with a single.

A walk to Ola starting pitcher Austin Merritt was to have loaded the bases but Basko was caught off of the third base and the old “pickle” play was in effect as a number of players were involved in the rundown before catcher Austin Black was able to apply the tag and end the game.

The freshmen will play again on Friday when they host Northgate in a doubleheader beginning at noon.

Meanwhile, the EC Junior Varsity will travel to the home of the Vikings Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 10am while the Varsity will host Hardaway at 3:30 with a game against Northside-Columbus to follow. 

Gardner scores hat trick as EC Freshmen open season with 10-run fourth en route to win

SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Indians freshmen took advantage of pitching problems by McIntosh Thursday evening with 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat the Chiefs 13-3 in the season opener.
The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Indians tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Kaleb Gardner was hit by a pitch and stole two bases before collecting the first of three runs on a throwing error by the pitcher.
McIntosh reclaimed the lead in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs and held a lead until the bottom of fourth inning.
Craig Newlands opened the frame with double and after one out, Dekel Williams reached on a bunt single but the duo appeared to be left on base as the second out was recorded.
However, EC began to cut into the lead as Charlie Paige walked to load the bases and Ryan Barber was hit by a pitch that scored Newlands.
A pitching change was made by the Chiefs but that didn't seem to work as Williams came home on a wild pitch that tied the game at 3-3 and Austin Black reached on a walk to reload the bases.
Gardner followed by receiving a free pass that scored Paige from third with the go ahead run and Zach Carlton was hit by a pitch that scored Barber.
Newlands batted for the second time in the inning and was able to reach base on a walk that scored a run and winning pitcher Andrew Martin aided his own cause by also receiving a run-scoring walk.
A balk eventually scored Newlands and the scoring finally end as Nico Sinese had a two-run single for the Indians.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Chiefs attempted to rally as the first two batters reached against Martin, but the runners were left stranded as the next three batters were retired to end the inning.
The game ended on the 10-run mercy rule as Ben Brisky reached on a force play and Gardner lined a double as Kaleb Carey and Jacob Medina followed with RBI singles.
Ethan Leonard started for the Indians and pitched the first two and two-third innings allowing a hit and three runs while recording three strikeouts before he was replaced by Martin who allowed a hit and recorded three strikeouts.
The EC freshmen are scheduled to play again on Saturday when the host the Westlake Lions in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11:00.

Indians win 2018 baseball season opener behind pitching of Austin Bunn, Ramey and Wright

SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Indians broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with six runs Monday night and added four more in the final two innings as they opened the 2018 season with a 10-0 win over the Fayette County Tigers.

Another Fayette County school will be the next opponent as the Indians will host the McIntosh Chiefs in a non-region game Tuesday night in Sharpsburg at 5:30.

Austin Bunn had an up and down first inning as the Tigers loaded the bases but was able to leave the runners stranded as he retired the final batter of the frame on a called third strike and retired the side in order in the top of the second with strikeouts.

Ahmad Ali proved to be tough in the bottom of the inning as he retired the side in order on called third strikes but would run into trouble in the bottom of the second as the Indians threatened to score early.

With one out, Jeff Sangster and Caleb Cashion reached on consecutive walks with the former advancing around the bases on a pair of fielding miscues.

However, Ali would settle down by recording a strikeout and a pop fly to short that would halt the scoring opportunity for the Indians.

The bottom of the fourth inning was a different matter for Ali as Sangster reached on another walk and with one out reached second on a bloop single by Dooley Bunn.

An infield error allowed Sangster to advance to third and the junior came home with the first run of the season as Daniel Smith recorded a sacrifice fly to center field.

The inning was not over as Trevor Crowdis reached on a single and Bailey Psathas reached on a walk that loaded the bases for Nick Daniel who batted after Ali was replaced on the mound by Spencer Hulsey.

Daniel greeted Hulsey with a shot into left center field that resulted in a bases clearing double that gave the Indians a 4-0 advantage.

Walks to Ryan Dyal and William Kelley loaded the bases and a pair of wild pitches allowed Daniel and courtesy runner Myles Dowell to come home and account for the other two runs of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Indians threatened to end the game on the mercy rule after two outs as Tony Player singled and Psathas reached on a walk with both coming home on an error by the Tigers’ left fielder that allowed Daniel to reach base.

Daniel came home on a double by Dyal and the lead was 9-0 but the Indians were denied the 10^th run as a groundout ended the frame.

However, the Indians were able to end the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as Ethan Walker reached on a leadoff single and eventually score with two outs in the frame as a flyball to right field was mishandled to end the game.

Fayette County was charged with five errors in the game.

After tossing three innings of two-hit, six strikeout baseball, Austin Bunn was lifted in favor of Peyton Ramey in the top of the fourth inning.

Ramey pitched two innings allowing one hit and recorded two strikeouts and was the winning while Lanier Wright pitched the top of the sixth inning.
