Davis, Lynch lead EC offense to region title

With "the senior" Lindsay "Lulu" Warren holding the trophy, the East Coweta Lady Indians
pose for one of many photos Thursday night as the defeated the Newnan Lady Cougars 10-1
in the final of the Region 2-AAAAAAAA Tournament.
Kelley Lynch (left) was 3-for-4 at the plate with
four RBIS and pitched a two-hitter with 12
strikeouts while Olivia Davis had a memorable
at bat in a 2-for-3, three run evening in the game.
SHARPSBURG-Kelley Lynch did her thing Thursday night by pitching a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and going 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs as the East Coweta Lady Indians defeated the Newnan Lady Cougars 10-1 in the Region 2-AAAAAAA Tournament.
The win, which ended in the bottom of the sixth inning, improved the Lady Indians’ record to 24-4 and will have the top seed for next week’s state playoff series with Region 4’s fourth seed Woodstock.
After the Lady Cougars were retired in order in the top of the first, the Lady Indians went to work as Lindsay “Lulu” Warren led off with a bunt single and advanced to third when a sacrifice by Olivia Davis was mishandled in the infield.
Davis took second on the play and Lynch followed by grounding out to first and Warren came home with the first run of the game.
Davis would score the second run of the game when Rachel Vaughan doubled and after the second out of the frame was recorded she came home on a double by Ashlynn Gunter.
Hannah Miller closed out the scoring for EC when she lined a 2-2 offering from Addie Andrews over the fence for a two-run home run and a 5-0 lead.
One of the few blemishes on Lynch’s pitching ledger occurred in the top of the second inning when Leslie Davis led off by drilling the first pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run to cut the lead to 5-1.

The Lady Indians responded in the bottom of the second with two runs to take a 7-1 lead and how they got them was under a special circumstance.
With Carmen Prior on second with one out, Davis came to the plate with a heavy heart as earlier in the day a close friend of the family was laid to rest.
Monica Lovett lost her battle to breast cancer Monday and Davis’ mother Sandi encouraged her to hit a home run in their friend’s honor as Olivia was unable to attend and was understandably upset.
In the spirit of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig promising a long ball to a child in the hospital, Olivia Davis responded by drilling a 2-0 offering over the right center field fence for a two-run home run.
While most players would be excited, Davis was heard by some to utter “I hit that one for Mrs. Monica.” after her blast.
Lovett would be pleased as Davis finished the evening 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.

While he is not looking to drink from the NHL Stanley Cup,
EC head coach Franklin Deloach is pleased to be holding
another region tournament trophy.

Lynch would follow the Davis home run with a single and Andrews would be lifted in favor of Ansley Houston who get into and out of trouble by walking Vaughan before Wright hit into a force play and Gunter would hit a popup to end the frame.
The score remained 7-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Hailey Bloom singled and stole second before moving to third when Danielle Curlee reached base on a dropped third strike.
Curlee stole second but the two Newnan runners were left stranded as Lynch retired the next three on strikeouts.
The game would eventually come to an end in the bottom of the sixth as Warren led off with a walk and advanced around to third as Davis followed with a single and took second on the throw bringing Lynch to the plate.
Facing a 2-0 count, Lynch hit the next offering over the left field fence for a three-run shot that ended the contest between the two rivals.

Vaughan, Lynch combine on four-hitter to defeat Newnan

SHARPSBURG-Kelley Lynch celebrated her 16th birthday Wednesday with three hits at the plate and combining with Rachel Vaughan on the pitching rubber with a four-hit outing as the East Coweta Lady Indians defeated the Newnan Lady Cougars 7-1 in the winners bracket of the Region 2-AAAAAAA Tournament.
The Lady Indians (23-4) advanced to the championship game where they will either meet the same Lady Cougars (16-12) at 6:30 or the Westlake Lady Lions who hammered the Wheeler Lady Wildcats 18-1 in a three inning contest.
The Lady Cougars and Lady Lions will meet in an elimination game at 4:30 to determine who advances and should an extra championship game become necessary, it would be played after the 6:30 contest.
As for the latest battle between Newnan and East Coweta, Vaughan and Addie Andrews held the batters in check with Vaughan getting help from her defense while Andrews found a number of ways to retire the Lady Indians.
The Lady Indians got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Andrews surrendered a walk to Carmen Prior who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsay “Lulu” Warren and raced home when Olivia Davis lined a double to left center field.
Davis, who was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored, moved to third on a single by Lynch and collected her first tally of the evening when Vaughan hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Lady Indians added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ashlynn Gunter drilled the first offering from Andrews over the right center field fence and after an out had a chance for more as Caroline Lively singled.
However, after courtesy runner Caison Byars stole second, Andrews was able to escape further trouble by retiring the next two batters.
The 3-0 lead seemed enough for Vaughan who was getting a lot of groundouts while also getting defensive stops like one provided by Davis who robbed Hailey Bloom of a single with a diving catch that started the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Cougars threatened to rally as Breanna Houston led off with a single and after a strikeout, Ansley Houston singled down the third baseline and Lynch was brought in to replace Vaughan.
The move paid off for EC as Lynch retired the next two batters by strikeout to end the frame and she would have the same success in the top of the sixth as an infield error and a hit batter were sandwiched by strikeouts.
Meanwhile, the Lady Indians added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Davis walked and eventually scored after consecutive singles by Lynch and Vaughan.
A sacrifice bunt by Aniston Wright moved courtesy runner Krys Odum and Vaughan into scoring position and Gunter followed with a groundout that scored Odum from third and gave the Lady Indians a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Andrews was replaced on the pitching rubber by Ansley Houston who had a chance to keep EC off the scoreboard after getting two outs on force plays.
However, the Lady Indians were able to add to the lead as Warren, who reached on a fielders choice, stole second and moved to third on a single by Davis who took second on a throw into the infield.
Lynch followed with a two-run single and the Lady Indians were close to ending the game on the mercy rule as Vaughan and Wright reached on walks but the third out of the inning was called after a collision between Vaughan and Curlee at shortstop.
In the top of the seventh inning, Lynch retired Sarah Vallery on a strikeout but lost the shutout as Ansley Houston drilled a shot over the left field fence for a solo home run.
The home run by Houston was her second of the tournament as she hit a three-run blast against Wheeler in the tournament opener.
After the home run, Lynch recovered and recorded two strikeouts to end the game then the team raced to a table where she blew out candles on a birthday cake as did teammate Odum who received a birthday cookie.

EC rides four home run parade in three inning win over Westlake

SHARPSBURG-When the East Coweta Lady Indians and Westlake Lady Lions get together, the game starts slow before a winner is declared by a surge in a late inning.
Such was not the case Tuesday evening as four home runs helped the Lady Indians quickly dispatch the Lady Lions 15-0 in a Region 2-AAAAAAA Tournament game that lasted three innings.
The Lady Indians (22-4) will host the Newnan Lady Cougars in the winners bracket game on Wednesday at 6:30 while the Lady Lions will face the Wheeler Lady Wildcats in the losers bracket at 4:30.
The Lady Indians took a 2-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the first inning as Kelley Lynch doubled and starting pitcher Rachel Vaughn walked.
Aniston Wright hit a flyball to right field but the ball popped loose as the glove hit the ground which allowed Lynch and courtesy runner Caison Byars to score but Wright would get t
agged out at second on the play to end the frame.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Indians went to work as Ashlynn Gunter doubled and scored on a single by Hanna Miller who would move to second on an infield error that allowed Caroline Lively to reach first.
Carmen Prior walked to load the bases then Lindsay “Lulu” Warren lined a two-run single that gave EC a 5-0 lead.
Kelley Lynch was 3-for-3 at the plate Tuesday with a home run
and three RBIs.
After a flyball accounted for two outs, the Lady Indians added to the lead as Lynch drilled a two run shot that gave the Lady Indians a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, all nine batters came to the plate and eight came home to allow the Lady Indians to end the contest early.
Gunter led off the frame with a solo home run to left center field and Miller followed with a shot of her own.
After the inning’s only out, Prior drilled a double down the third base line and Warren reached base on a walk.
A single by Davis scored Prior and advanced Warren to third for Lynch who had an RBI single and took third on the throw home.
Vaughn would reach on a walk to load the bases for Wright who would hit a 2-0 offering over the center field fence for a grand slam that ended the contest in 55 minutes.
As for Vaughn’s effort on the pitching rubber, the junior retired all nine batters she faced with two strikeouts and five groundouts.
Lynch was 3-for-3 in the game with her three RBIs as she missed while Gunter and Miller each had two hits in the game.

Newnan defeats Wheeler

Andrews pitches while Davis, Houston powers Newnan to win over Wheeler

Addie Andrews allowed a bloop single and a walk in four
innings as well as contributing a two-run single in Newnan's
12-0 four inning win over Wheeler in the Region 2-AAAAAAA
Tournament.
SHARPSBURG-The Newnan Lady Cougars took advantage of infield errors Tuesday with home runs by Lesley Davis and Ansley Houston to support the pitching of Addie Andrews as they defeated the Wheeler Lady Wildcats 12-0 in the first round of the Region 2-AAAAAAA tournament.
The Lady Cougars (15-11) will meet the East Coweta Lady Indians in the winners bracket game on Wednesday at 6:30 while the Lady Wildcats will face the Westlake Lady Lions at 4:30.
After Andrews retired the side in order to start the game, her teammates went to work after one out in the bottom of the frame.
Hailey Bloom reached on an error and Danielle Curlee reached on another fielding miscue which allowed Bloom to advance to third.
Both runners pulled off a double steal with Bloom coming home for Newnan’s first run of the contest.
Davis reached on a walk and Sarah Vallery singled past the second baseman to score Curlee for another run and Houston ended the scoring for the inning when she drilled a shot over the right center field fence for a three-run home run.
After another easy inning was tossed by Andrews, the Lady Cougars did more damage in the bottom of the second as Hannah Scarbrough joined the offensive party with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Bloom.
Curlee followed with a RBI triple then Davis followed by drilling her home run over the center field fence to give the Lady Cougars an 8-0 lead.
After Davis’ home run, the Lady Cougars added to the lead as Breanna Houston singled and moved around the bases on a pair of wild pitches. Own cause with a two-run single
Vallery walked and advanced to second on an error as Ansley Houston reached first and Breanna Houston crossed the plate and Andrews aided her own cause with a two-run single.
Andrews was tagged out at single but an infield error allowed Darby Keene to reach base and the final run of the game to score when Scarbrough batted for the second time in the frame and responded with a run scoring double.
Meanwhile, Andrews was moving along on the pitching rubber and retired the first eight batters before allowing a walk in the top of the third inning and a bloop single in the top of the fourth.
Andrews finished with eight strikeouts while getting three groundouts and a flyball to Paige De Poi in right field.

EC wins on "Lulu Night"

It was "Lulu Night" for the
East Coweta Lady Indians as
senior Lindsay "Lulu" Warren
was honored on Senior Night
SHARPSBURG-Thursday night may have been “Lulu Night” on the East Coweta softball field, but it was a freshman and two sophomores who did the offensive damage in a 9-0 win over the Chapel Hill Lady Panthers.
The win improved the Lady Indians overall record to 21-4 as they begin play next Tuesday at home in the Region 2-AAAAAAA Tournament with a game against the Westlake Lady Lions.
Marking the evening was Senior Night or in this case Lulu Night as the Lady Indians’ only senior Lindsay “Lulu” Warren was honored in her last regular season game before starting a collegiate career at Georgia State University.
The Lady Indians took the lead with two outs in the bottom of the second inning as Hanna Miller walked and Caison Byars singled before Caroline Lively reached on an infield error that allowed Miller to score.
Byars would give EC a 2-0 lead when she came home on a single off Chapel Hill starter Kira Morgan by Carmen Prior.
The Lady Indians threatened top add to the lead in the bottom of the third with two outs as Rachel Vaughan was hit by a pitch and Ashlynn Gunter reached on a walk but Morgan was able to leave the duo stranded after a strikeout ended the frame.
After recording the first out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Morgan ran into trouble as Lively reached on a walk and while Prior single and both runners moved as the left fielder misplayed the hit.
On her night, Warren came to the plate and the senior hit a ground ball to third but the ball was mishandled and she beat the throw to first while Lively came home to increase the lead to 3-0.
A single by Olivia Davis scored Prior from third then Kelley Lunch came to the plate and drilled the first offering she saw from Morgan and deposited the ball over the center field fence for a three-run home run and a 6-0 lead.
Lynch’s home run resulted in a pitching change as Kira Morgan was replaced by her sister Ashley on the rubber with Vaughan coming to the plate.
Ashley Morgan would also be victimized by her defense as Vaughan hit a ground ball in the infield that was mishandled and the junior pitcher would reach first on the play.
Lindsay "Lulu" Warren is shown at third during a game at Campbell recently
getting ready to score a run. Warren scored a run, recorded an RBI and caught
the final out of the game Thursday to preserve a 9-0 win.
After the second out of the frame was finally recorded, Miller followed with a single and on the play a throw got away from third which allowed courtesy runner Krys Odum to score and allow Miller to reach third.
Miller scored the final run of the game as Byars lined a double to give the freshman her second hit of the night.
The 9-0 advantage was more than enough for Vaughan who gave up a pair of singles to start the game before a caught stealing, a strikeout and a flyball to end the top of the first inning.
Vaughan, who tossed a three-hitter Wednesday night against Northgate, had a little trouble against Chapel Hill but got help from her defense to preserve a shutout that she shared with Lynch who took over with one out in the top of the fifth inning and two runners on base.
Lynch retired Bella Caricari on a strikeout and Paige Vincent hit a ball that was appropriately caught by Warren the senior that ended the game.

Northgate's Sarah Turi had a two-run double in the top
of the fifth inning after a run scoring single earlier.
SHARPSBURG-Sarah Turi went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs including the go ahead run Wednesday evening as the Northgate Lady Vikings defeated the East Coweta Lady Indians 7-5 in a junior varsity softball game.
The game was the season finale for the Lady Indians who finished with a 13-4-1 record this year.
East Coweta took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Kylie Ferguson led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Macie Wiggins.
After the second out of the inning, Kenadie Cooper singled and Ferguson was caught in a rundown before scoring on a throwing error.
The Lady Vikings took the lead in the top of the third inning when Audrey Baxter and Madison Edwards reached on consecutive one out singles off starter Aniston Wright and scored on a single by Turi and a groundout by Brandon respectively.
In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Indians tied the game at 2-2 as Olivia Cook reached on a one out walk while Cooper and Caison Byars reached on one out singles before Ansley Duffey hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Sasha Moraweitz pitched the first four innings for Northgate
Wednesday evening.
Northgate took the lead with one out in the top of the fifth inning as Baxter reached on an infield error and moved to second on a wild pitch before moving to third on a single by Edwards who would steal second to put both runners into scoring position.
Both would score when Turi hit an 0-1 offering from Aniston Wright for a two-run double that gave the visitors a 4-2 lead and after a pitching change and a groundout, Turi would score from third on a single by Natalie Heath.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, EC tried to chip away the 5-2 deficit as Ashleigh Campbell reached on a single to open the frame.
Eliza Kuhne entered the game as a pinch runner and moved into scoring position with a stolen base then came home on a one out double by Katie Taylor.
Kenadie Cooper went 3-for-4 at the plate for EC and had three
putouts in right field
The Lady Indians were unable to cut into the deficit any further as Lady Viking pitcher Alissa Bolinger induced a groundout and a strikeout to end the threat.
The Lady Vikings took a 7-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning as Gracie Storey doubled, Baxter returned to the game and stole second before moving to third on a groundout before scoring on a double by Maddie Maxey who scored on a double by Brandon.
Bolinger, who took over for Moraweitz in the fifth inning, found the bottom of the seventh inning somewhat tight as the Lady Indians tried to rally.
Cook, Cooper and Byars had consecutive singles that accounted for a run and after a groundout another run came home as Campbell hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Cooper was 3-for-4 with a run scored while Byars was 2-for-4 in the game for the Lady Indians.
Ashleigh Griffin was awarded first on catcher’s interference and Taylor reached on a walk to load the bases but the rally came to an end as Ferguson hit a ground ball back to Bolinger who threw to first to end the game.

Vaughan hurls three-hitter, drives home three as EC defeats Northgate in five

Rachel Vaughan handled the Northgate Lady Vikings on the
pitching rubber by allowing three hits in an 8-0 five inning win.
SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Lady Indians took advantage of fielding miscues with key hits including a two-run double by starting pitcher Rachel Vaughan Wednesday as they defeated the Northgate Lady Vikings 9-0 in a varsity softball game called after five innings.
The win improves the Lady Indians overall record to 20-4 as they prepare to host the 2015 Class AAAAA champion and one time nemesis Chapel Hill Lady Panthers in a non-region game beginning at 5:30 with a Senior Night ceremony preceding the contest for lone EC grad-to-be Lindsay “Lulu” Warren.
The Lady Indians took the initial lead in the bottom of the first inning as Olivia Davis reached on a one out double and advanced to third on a single by Kelley Lynch before coming coming home when Vaughan grounded out to short.
In the top of bottom of the second inning, EC added to the lead as Ashlynn Gunter reached on an infield error and after a pair of outs was able to get into scoring position before coming home on a single to left by Warren.
After being retired in order in the bottom of the third by Northgate starting pitcher Kaitlin Bailey, the Lady Indians were able to break open a close 2-0 lead.
Gunter led off with a single to center field and moved into scoring after Hanna Miller laid down a sacrifice bunt.
After moving to third on a dropped third strike, Gunter gave the Lady Indians a 3-0 lead as she scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Carmen Prior.
The ball was misplayed and courtesy runner Caison Byars followed Gunter home with another run while Prior raced around the bases and stopped at third.
Warren laid down a bunt single that allowed Prior to score and the lead grew to 5-0 but the former raced to second on the throw home and the attempt to get her at second failed as the ball was on a throwing error and Warren, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, was able to score her second run of the game.
Davis and Lynch followed with consecutive singles that gave each 2-for-3 afternoons at the plate and both eventually scored on a double by Vaughan.
The top of the fifth inning was typical Vaughan as she surrendered a single to Brittany Trammell to open the frame but was part of a force play at second before recording a strikeout and a ground ball to end the game.
In five innings, Vaughan allowed Trammell’s single as one to Charla Echols in the first inning and a fourth inning double to Kelsey Williston.
