Indians finishes sweep of Panthers with Friday win

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

East Coweta 12 Langston Hughes 2 (five innings)

SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Indians took advantage of several miscues inthe field by Langston Hughes Friday night to come away with a 12-2 Region 3-AAAAA victory over the Panthers that gave them a sweep in the series.
The five-inning victory improves the Indians overall mark to 11-0 and 3-0 in the region as they prepare to host Lovejoy in a non-region game on Monday before beginning a three-game region series with the Douglas County Tigers who were 5-1 losers to the Newnan Cougars Friday night in Douglasville.
"We did what we were supposed to in the series for the most part," commented EC head coach Franklin Deloach. "There were some hiccups but that happens. Our defense played well and we had good pitching from Zack McCurry who twice in the series."
East Coweta wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as Cameron Smith reached on a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a groundout by Bryce Gemmel.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Indians added a run as Matthew Meyer reached on a leadoff walk, advanced to third on bunt singles by Travis Williams and Blake Lorow before coming home on a one out single by Smith.
McCurry lost his chance at a shutout in the top of the third inning as J. Wyatt walked and after a hit batter and a bunt single loaded the bases would score with one out in the frame when Mike Bell was hit by a pitch.
However, the Indians added to the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning as 11 batters went to the plate and six runners came home to give the home team an 8-1 lead.
Jon Banks singled and advanced to second on a balk and Geremy Walton reached on an infield error before Meyer had an RBI double.
A sacrifice bunt by Lorow moved Walton and Meyer into scoring position for Williams who had another productive bunt single as Walton came home fromthird.
Williams stole second and Tim Manning delivered a single to right that scored Meyer and after a balk was called, Williams came home to give the Indians a 6-1 lead.
Manning scored on a single by Smith and after Gemmel reached on a walk and Cole Antmann singled, Banks ended the scoring with a single to left field.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Indians as Lorow and Williams reached on consecutive one out walks and with Manning at the plate, a balk was called and courtesy runner Jordan Lewis was awarded home.
Manning reached on a single and Smith followed a two-run single that scored Williams and Manning and eventually came home on athrowing error by the catcher.
McCurry had another solid outing as he pitched four innings allowing two hits, one run, two walks and hit a batter while recording eight strikeouts before leaving in favor of Jay Mann in the top of the fifth ining.
Mann opened the frame with a strikeout before surrendering a single to Max Hyde, who would advance to second on a wild pitch, to third on a throwing error on Lorow and score when a throw from Lewis in center field sailed out of the field of play.
After all of the drama from the scoring play, Mann settled down as he induced a fly before ending the game on a strikeout.

Dawson fires two-hitter in Newnan victory

Newnan's Brandon Dawson was on top of his game again Thursday night as allowed two hits and recorded 13 strikeouts in the Cougars' 3-0 win over the Douglas County Tigers. The teams will meet again tonight in Douglasville.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Newnan 3 Douglas County 0

EC 10 Langston Hughes 4, Heritage 13 Loganville Christian 3

If Newnan Cougar fans wondered if Brandon Dawson was recovered from an injury that cost him year of baseball, they could look no further than Thursday night as he allowed two hits in a 3-0 complete game over the Douglas County Tigers at Joe Pope Field.
The Region 3-AAAAAA victory was the second for the Cougars (9-3, 2-0) over the Tigers (4-8,0-2) this week in a series that will conclude this evening in Douglasville.
Dawson assisted in Newnan scoring the only run he would need in the game in the bottom of the second inning as he reached on a one out single and Charles reeves followed by lining s hot into the right center field gap for a triple that scored courtesy runner Drew Morris.
Devin Henry created his own version of A-B-C baseball in the bottom of the third reached first easily on a bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring when Will Dreggors grounded out to second base.
The final run of the game came with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Derrick Nelson reached on a single, advanced to third on an infield error then came home with an unearned run when a flyball hit to center field by Sam Buchanan was dropped.
As for Dawson's outing on the mound, the 2011 Coweta County co-player of the year retired 11 batters in a row after Tigers leadoff hitter Calvin Vargas reached on an infield error to open the game.
Logan Tillem would breakup the no-hitter and the consecutive outs streak with two outs in the top of the fourth inning with a double but Dawson recovered retiring Tigers starting pitcher David Ihrig on strikeout.
The strikeout started a streak of seven batters in a row returning to the Tigers bench but Dawson would have his only "difficult" inning of the night in the top of the seventh as Tillem led off with a questionable infield single and Connor Moroney reached on Dawson's only walk of the game.
With the tying run coming to plate, Dawson recovered and dispatched the Tigers quickly as he retired the next three batters on strikeouts with the last two taking called third strikes.
The line on Dawson was not unusual for the senior who allowed only two hits and the walk as he recorded 13 strikeouts and of the 25 batters faced, 13 received a first pitch strike.
Ihrig may have deserved a better fate as he pitched a quality outing for the Tigers as he allowed five hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and had four strikeouts while inducing nine outs in the infield.
In other area games, East Coweta won their 11th game of the season witha 10-4 victory over Langston Hughes Thursday night in Fairburn while Heritage got a measure of revenge on Loganville Christian with a 13-3 home victory.
The Hawks, who lost to the same Lions club by a 5-4 count last week in Loganville improved to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in GISA Region 1-AAA as they head into spring break and an April 9 date at Weber for a region contest.
In the Indians' victory, the game was tied at 2-2 after two innings when the EC took the lead with a single run in the top of the fourth inning and scored two runs each in the fourth through sixth innings and one more in the top of the seventh.
Austin Bellamy recovered from a slow start against Hillgrove to go three innings Thursday for the win with help from Bryce Gemmel and Matthew Meyer who logged two innings apiece.
The two teams will close their Region 3-AAAAAA series tonight at 6:00 in Sharpsburg.

Indians erase 5-0 deficit to defeat Hawks in 'team effort'

SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Indians erased a 5-0 deficit Friday night and remained undefeated with a team effort in the opinion of head coach Franklin Deloach to escape with a 10-6 come-from-behind non-region win at home over the Hillgrove Hawks.
“It was a great team effort,” he said. “We were down 5-0 and challenged the guys into achieving process over result and it paid off.”
The result was favorable early for Indians starter Austin Bellamy as he retired the side in order in the top of the first inning but he would have trouble in the top of the second inning as the Hawks scored four runs on three singles, a walk and a triple by Hawks starting pitcher Mitchell Mannio to take a 4-0 lead before retiring the final three batters in the frame.
Bellamy retired the first two batters of the top of the third inning but he would surrender a single to Brian Johnson who stole second and score on a single by Justin Haney.
After three innings, Bellamy would turn the game over in the top of the fourth inning to Bryce Gemmel who gave the Indians two and one-third solid innings during his stint.
“Bellamy struggled tonight but he battled through it,” Deloach said of his starter. “He made adjustments and then we turned it over to Gemmel who would do a great job for us.”
The Indians still faced a 5-0 deficit and the results of the first three innings were a single by Tim Manning and a pair of walks, but the Indians rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5.
Cole Antmann reached on a ball misplayed by the shortstop while Jonathan Banks and Geremy Walton followed with singles that loaded the bases and Matthew Meyer followed with a result as a two-run single put the Indians on the scoreboard.
Austin Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases again and with Travis Williams at the plate, Walton came home when a balk was called against Manning.
Williams reached on an error by the Hawks shortstop that allowed Meyer to score and courtesy runner Justin Lewis crossed the plate with the tying run on an error by the Hawks’ catcher.
The Indians took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Banks lined a solo home run over the left field fence then Walton followed with a single, a stolen base and a run when Jones hit into a force play.
The Hawks (6-6) cut the margin to 7-6 in the top of the sixth inning as Johnson reached on a leadoff single, stole second and after Gemmel recorded a strikeout and hit a batter before surrendering an RBI single to Nick Andrews and being subsequently replaced on the mound by Meyer.
Meyer would get the Indians out of trouble as he retired Jacob Farmer on strikes and ended the inning when he forced Tyler Weyenberg out of the baseline on the way to first base.
The Indians got the run back in the bottom of the sixth inning a couple more after the first two batters of the frame were retired as Gemmel reached on a walk and advanced to third when the outfielder overran a single by Antmann.
Gemmel and Antmann scored on a double to left by Banks and after a wild pitch moved him to third, Walton followed with an RBI single to close the scoring.
For the evening, Banks and Walton each were 3-for-4 at the plate and combined to score five runs and drive home the same amount.
Antmann took over for Meyer on the mound in the top of the seventh inning and got off to a slow start as he walked a batter while another reached on an infield error before he retired the next two batters on strikes before getting a flyball to right to end the game.

Vikings defeat Titans in four innings

Northgate 17 Drew 2

Region 4-AAAAA baseball

Vikings' starter Matt Farmakis
pitched three innings in Wednesday afternoon's 17-2 win over the Drew Titans. He allowed a two hits and two runs (one earned) and recorded five strikeouts.
After a frustrating afternoon last Friday at home against the McIntosh Chiefs, the Northgate Vikings responded on Wednesday at home with a 17-2 victory over the Drew Titans in a Region 4-AAAAA contest.
The four-inning victory improves the Vikings overall record to 8-4 on the season and 5-2 in the region as they travel to Jonesboro Thursday afternoon to face the Mt. Zion Bulldogs in a game that was originally scheduled for this past Monday but was postponed due to the inclement weather in the area.
After starting pitcher Matt Farmakis breezed through the top of the first inning, the Vikings gave him a lead in the bottom of the frame as James Poropatic led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and went to third on a wild pitch before coming home a single to center by Tyler Dahlberg.
Dahlberg moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double down the third base line by Chase Allen to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
After Jordan Schmits reached on a walk, Titans' starter Mason Williams appeared to be getting out of a potential mess as he retired Jeffrey Ginn on a strikeout.
However, a ground ball hit to the Drew shortstop by Andrew Burden was misplayed and the bottom began to fall on Williams as Allen came home for a run.
Walks to Jonathan Hamilton and Buddy Green scoreed Schmits and after Poropatic was hit by a pitch, Burden scored to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead.
A wild pitch scored courtesy runner Zach Schmits and a throwing error by the catcher allowed Green to score.
An RBI double by Armond Upshaw and an RBI single by Dahlberg completed the first inning scoring by the Vikings who were shutout by Williams in the bottom of the second innind despite allowing a double to Ginn.
Williams was not as fortunate in the bottom of the third inning as Poropatic reached on a one out walk, stole second on came home on a triple by Upshaw who came when a ground ball hit to second by Dahlberg was misplayed and the lead was 11-2.
A single and a force play followed then Ginn collected an RBI double and an error in the outfield allowed Schmits and Ginn to score and give the home team a 14-2 lead.
Ginn was one of five players for Northgate who had two hits in the game. The others were Poropatic, Upshaw, Dahlberg and Allen.
After a solid three-inning perfoamnce that saw him allow two hits and two runs (one earned) along with five strikeouts, Farmakis was relieved on the mound by Robert Massenburg who was pitching for the first time in a week.
The rust showed as Massenburg walked Brandon Pearson who was erased on an unusual force play in which DeMarcus Reed hit a line drive off the pitcher's side and the ball was retrieved by third baseman Chase Allen who threw to Dahlberg at second for the out.
Massenburg was not hurt as he walked Antonio Gamble before forcing him at second and ending the inning with a strikeout of Tracy Gaston.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Vikings head coach Greg Hamilton unloaded his bench as four players pinch-hit in the frame.
Hamilton led off with a single and after a popfly to third, Poropatic doubled and Zach Schmits advanced to third before both came home courtesy of a single to right field by Connor Wilson.
After a popfly on the infield, an infield error was followed by a single from the bat of Blake Whitney that allowed Wilson to come home with the final run of the game.

Indians take advantage of Eagles miscues to win in five

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Indians took advantage of five errors and two wild pitches on a cold and windy Friday night to defeat the South Forsyth Eagles 10-0 in a game called after five innings under the mercy rule.
The victory improves the Indians’ record to 3-0 in the early season while the Eagles fell to 2-3.
The Indians scored the only run they would need on the night in the bottom of the first inning as Cameron Smith reached on a triple that went over the right fielder’s head and eventually came home on a wild pitch with one out and Cole Antmann at the plate.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Indians added to their run total as Geremy Walton reached on an infield single with two outs in the frame and came home on a double to left field by Jonathan Smith.
Two out magic returned to the Indians in the bottom of the fourth inning as Tim Manning reached on a walk and stole second before two more walks followed and a wild pitch brought him home from third.
Unfortunately for South Forsyth, the bottom of the fifth inning would become a nightmare as the Indians capitalized on errors to score seven times to end the game.
Walton led off with an infield single and stole second before coming home on a single to right by Banks who would hustle to second on the throw home and move to third on an errant pickoff attempt before he scored on a single to right from Bryce Gemmel.
After advancing to second on a groundout and advancing to third on a pinch hit single by Jordan Lewis,
Gemmel gave the Indians a 6-0 lead when he scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Manning that also allowed Lewis to reach third.
Lewis scored as Smith reached on an error by the Eagles shortstop and after Matthew Meyer  reached first after being hit by a pitch, Antmann hit a flyball to right field that was dropped allowing Smith and Meyer to score and the Indians’ batter to reach second.
For the second time of the inning, Walton came to the plate and hit a ground ball to shortstop that was mishandled and allowed Antmann to score the final run of the night.
Walton, Banks and Gemmel had two hits each in the victory while Zach McCurry had a solid outing on the mound allowing a third inning single to Zack Baus and a walk while recording four strikeouts.
The Indians will have two road games in the upcoming week with a Tuesday March 5 game at Luella and  a game on Thursday March 7 at Northside-Columbus.
