Indians JV gain split against Chiefs

SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Indians scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and managed to come away with a 13-5 victory over the McIntosh Chiefs in the second game of a Junior Varsity doubleheader played Saturday.
The victory for the Indians gave them a split on the day as the Chiefs scored twice in the top of the ninth to gain a 3-1 extra inning win.
The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Bailey Psathas, Nick Daniels, Ryan Griffin and Dooley Bunn reached on consecutive walks but were unable to add to the total as Chiefs starting pitcher Drew Sage got out of trouble with an infield pop and a double play.
McIntosh tied the game in the top of the fourth inning as Ethan Ange led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Ashton Angier and scored on a single to left by Ty Butler.
After the first batter was retired in the top of the ninth inning, Chase Martuas reached on a walk, Duncan Farrell followed with a single before Andrew Pinkney hit an RBI double and Max Geiger hit a sacrifice fly to center field for another run.
The Indians tried to rally in the bottom of the frame with some two-out magic as Psathas and Daniels singled, but a called third strike ended the rally and the game.
In the second game, the Indians took control early as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Psathas and Daniels led off with singles and advanced on a sacrifice by Jeff Sangster.
After a strikeout and a walk to William Kelley loaded the bases, a wild pitch was tossed and Psathas came home with the first run of the game.
Errors in both the infield and outfield allowed Daniels and Kelley to come home and give the Indians a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the high scoring second inning, the Indians sent 12 to the plate securing a combination of five hits and two walks while capitalizing on a pair of errors bythe Chiefs..
Trevor Crowdis led off with a walk and advanced to second on an infield error that allowed Psathas to reach base as well.
Daniels singled home Crowdis and Sangster followed with an RBI single of his own before Bunn contributed a run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
After a walk and a fielder's choice, Anthony Williams and Ethan Walker had RBI singles and they would score on an outfield error that allowed crowdis to reach base for the second time in the frame.
Crowdis gave EC a 10-0 when he was awarded home on a balk by the pitcher.
The Chiefs got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning but the Indians responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as the Chiefs were guilty of an error and bases loaded walk to Walker.
McIntosh scored twice in the top of the fourth inning to cut the advantage to 12-4 as Pinkney and Geiger had RBI singles with two out in the inning.
The Indians scored their final in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs as Sangster was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Bunn before coming home on an error.
The Chiefs scored their final run in the top of the sixth inning as Franell singled and eventually scored on a single by Geiger.
Next on the junior varsity schedule for EC is Tuesday in Tyrone for a tilt against the Sandy Creek Patriots beginning at 5:30.

Indians defeat Patriots with seven-run fourth inning


SHARPSBURG-A seven-run fourth inning by the East Coweta Indians helped support the pitching of Mason Meyer and four relievers Friday night in an 8-3 victory over the Sandy Creek Patriots.
The victory was the second straight over the Patriots after a 12-0 win Thursday evening in Tyrone after a 2-1 season opening loss at home to Eagles Landing Christian Academy.
After a scoreless first inning, the Indians scored their first run of the game with one out in the bottom of the second as Austen Russell reached first on an infield error, advanced on a walk to Trevor Gaddy and came home on a single to right field by Nate Gick.
The Patriots, coached by former EC football and baseball player Lee Heaberlin, had a chance to get on the board with one out in the top of the fourth inning as Cole Jackson reached on a walk and Parker Mallet followed with a single to center field.
However, reliever Brian Oliver was able to induce an infield pop and a swinging third strike to end the rally.
In the bottom of the frame, the Indians made the Patriots pay as the sent 12 batters to the plate to account for the seven runs.
Jaquez Williams and Keith Wilson led off with walks and Russell followed with a single that loaded the bases.
Gaddy singled to right to score Williams while an infield error followed that allowed Gick to reach base and Wilson to come home.
Dillon Roller doubled to left to bring Russell plateward and after a walk to Zack Bruce, Devontae Brown and Ryan Dyal had back-to-back sacrifice flies and an error gave the Indians a 6-0 cushion with the final runs coming home on a two-run single by Russell.
The Patriots was able to cut into the lead in the top of the fifth as Kaleb Slaughter reached on a one out single and came home on a double by Jared Kent who scored on a double by Thomas Farr.
Sandy Creek added one more run in the top of the sixth inning as Mallett led off the frame with a solo home run over the left field fence.
Meyer gave the Indians three effective innings on the mound as he allowed two hits while recording four strikeouts before giving way to Oliver in the fourth.
Cody Rogers followed in the fifth with Avery Reynolds and AJ Summers working the final innings.
Russell and Gick each had two hits for the Indians with the former scoring twice while Mallett and Slaughter recorded a pair of hits for the Patriots.
Next game for the Indians will be Tuesday when they will be on the road to face Troup County while the Patriots will host Creekside.
