Indians finish season with perfect record in championship game

SHARPSBURG-After finishing last season as the runnerup in last year's Coweta County Middle School Athletic League championship football game, the East Coweta Indians struck gold as Chris Moore rushed for 125 yards and scored twice Tuesday night to lead the Indians to a 25-12 win over the Madras Eagles.
The game, played at Garland Shoemake Stadium, resulted in a perfect season for the Indians.
The Eagles, seeded second in the CCMSAL, scored first as quarterback Jake Barberio connected with Mason Bervaldi on 40-yard pass play along the left sideline for a touchdown with 3:02 remaining in the first period.

East Coweta's Chris Moore rushed for 125 yards and scored twice in the game. A third touchdown was called back during the game after a flag was thrown.

However, the Indians answered on the next position as Jayland Rivers caught a pass from quarterback Corey Bridges and the former was able to get away from the Eagles defense for a 72-yard touchdown with 90 seconds remaining and after a successful extra point attempt the Indians had a 7-6 lead.
The one-point lead held through the second period and halftime as the two teams were unable to get past the 30-yard line of the other on occasion but he Indians were able to get on the board as the third period opened.
Opening the second half from their own 42, the Indians utilized four rushing plays to score as Moore raced past the Eagles' defense for a 30-yard run to the end zone with 6:30 remaining.
The Indians didn't have to wait long to reclaim possession as Austin Bunn intercepted a pass at the Eagles' 27 with 5:54 remaining.
After a two-yard run on the first play, Moore took the handoff and raced 25 yards for a touchdown with 5:13 remaining in the period to give the Indians a 19-6 lead after a missed extra point attempt.
The Eagles drew closer in the fourth period after recovering a fumble at midfield in the early stages of the fourth period as a 28-yard pass from Barberio to Jake Queen started a three-play series that ended Toby Potter scored ona 28-yard run with 6:50 remaining.
However, the two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the score was 19-12.
Barberio accounted for 160 yards of total offense for Madras.
The final tally occured on the next possession as the Indians took over at their own 47 and after runs by Moore and Raklyan Moss, Marshay Walker closed the scoring with a 15-yard run with 4:47 remaining.

Reid accounts for three touchdowns in EC homecoming win over Pebblebrook

Christian Reid made the most of his start at quarterback Friday night at Garland Shoemake Stadium by rushing for two touchdowns and passing for another as the East Coweta Indians defeated the Pebblebrook Falcons 34-7.

The homecoming victory improved the Indians' overall record to  6-1 and remained in a three way tie for second in Region 3-AAAAAA with a 3-1 mark while the Falcons fell to  3-4, 1-3 in the region.

The Indians took the lead on the opening series of the game as they went on an eight-play 62-yard drive that ended when Carlos Ford bolted through the right side of the EC line for a 32-yard run and score with 8:22 remaining.

Ford eventually finished the game with 62 yards on nine carries.

Pebblebrook had a chance to tie the game on their second series after thwarting an EC fake punt at the 38 of the latter.

The falcons opened with a 24-yard run by Quantavious Mitchell and three plays later found themselves at the one yard line as Jacobe Burke raced 14 yards on a quarterback keeper.

However, the drive came to an end as a Falcons fumble rolled into the end zone and the Indians' Reggie Jones came up with the loose ball with 2:42 left in the quarter.

The Indians took the 7-0 lead into the second quarter and added to the lead as a 15-yard penalty against the Falcons and four straight runs by Calvin Kirby led to a two-yard touchdown run with 5:36 remaining.

After a three-and-out by the Falcons, the Indians took over at their own 47 with 3:49 remaining and went on a nine-play drive that saw Reid, who was playing in place of injured starter Wil LaGuradia, run three times including an 11-yard keeper to the right side of the end zone with a minute remaining.

The extra point attempt failed and EC eventually took a 20-0 lead to the locker room as Pebblebrook was unable to respond.

Reid accounted for the next two scores by the Indians as he scored on 13-yard keeper with two minutes remaining in the third quarter and connected with Nick Clarke on an eight-yard pass 30 seconds into the final quarter.

The Falcons averted a shutout with a touchdown in the last five minutesof the game.

Next on the East Coweta agenda will be a trip to Douglasville with a region game against the Dougas County Tigers.

Hamilton Schubert and two relievers combined to allow two hits as the Newnan Cougars defeated the East Coweta Indians 7-0 in a Freshman baseball game played Wednesday at Joe Pope Field.

The first three innings were a scoreless battle between Schubert and Indians’ starter Ryan Griffin until the bottom of the fourth inning when defensive miscues plagued EC and allowed Newnan to score three runs.

With one out, Jacob Blair was awarded home for the first run when a throw from the outfield went out of the playing field while Nick Bowie and Hunter White each had RBI singles in the frame.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cougars added to the lead as they scored four runs to assume the 7-0 lead.

After the first batter was retired by reliever Cole Eiland, Blair reached on a double while Karsten Dye and Will Wilbanks each reached base as they were hit by a pitch.

A wild pitch allowed Blair to score from third and Dye was able to score as Bowie grounded out to first.

Jimmy Kniedel walked and Dalton Twiggs reached first as he was hit by a pitch to load the bases and force a pitching change.

The Cougars were able to take advantage of the change as Elliot Schubert and Robbie Broderick reached base by receiving run scoring walks.

After a four strikeout performance and getting several groundball outs, Schubert was replaced on the mound by Hunter Moore who recorded three strikeouts and had a walk before yielding the top of the seventh inning to Peyton Cooper.

The Indians had a chance to rally against Cooper as Ethan Gazan reached on a error and Chandler Robinson singled with one out in the top of the seventh inning.

However, the rally ended quickly for the Indians as the Cougars were able to turn a double play that ended the game.

SHARPSBURG-Avery Reynolds allowed one hit in five runs and made a one run lead stand as the East Coweta Indians defeated the Northgate Vikings 1-0 and gain a split in a Junior Varsity baseball doubleheader played Thursday afternoon.
In the opener, the Vikings scored all seven runs in the top of the third inning and held off an Indians' rally to come away with a 7-6 victory.
The game lasted six innings under a one hour, 50 minute time limit.
The Indians took the early lead in the game as Nate Gick and Ethan Darrow reached on consecutive singles while Trevor Gaddy reached on a walk to load the bases before the Vikings turned a double play that allowed Gick to come home.
The Indians added to the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Cameron Jackson reached on a leadoff walk and Dillon Roller followed with a double and Matt Holloway reached on a walk.
A wild pitch scored courtesy runner Emilio Morales from third and moved Roller to third and the latter would come home on a sacrifice fly to center field by Gick.
The Vikings came back in the top of the third inning as Nick Conort led off by reaching on an error, Will Horne singled and Patrick Ragan loaded the bases when an error was committed on a sacrifice bunt.
Caleb Upshaw followed with a single that scored Conort and Horne that cut the margin to 3-2.
Patrick Pitzer hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ragan from third with the tying run and after Charles Barrera reached on a single, Terrance Carter followed with a two-run double that gave Northgate a 5-3 lead.
On the play, a throw came into the infield and went past third and Carter was awarded home for another run.
Noah Ratliff and Conort followed with consecutive doubles to give the Vikings a 7-3 lead.
The Indians came back in the bottom of sixth against winning pitcher Nick Kempf with three runs before the game reached the time limit.
Morales led off with a single and one out later reached second when the Vikings committed an error on a force play attempt that also allowed Holloway to reach base.
Gick walked to load the bases but he was retired at second on a force play in which Morales scored while Gaddy followed with a single that scored Holloway and Darrow.
Kempf got the win for Northgate after pitching four and two-third innings of relief allowing five hits and recording four strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the story was the effort of Reynolds who allowed a game opening single to Barrera and held the rest of the Vikings in check as he retired the remaining 15 batters in the five-inning contest with eight strikeouts added to his ledger.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning as Gick reached on an error and advanced around the bases on a single by Darrow and a wild pitch before scoring when Gaddy grounded out.
While Reynolds threw a gem, the duo of Parker Baxter and Justin Whipple combined on a three-hitter recording five strikeouts.

The Newnan Cougars took advantage of several miscues by the East Coweta Indians Monday night to come away with a 10-5 victory in a Freshman baseball game played played at Joe Pope Field.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when Elton Gazan and Jacob Fiscus reached on back to back singles allwoing the Indians (5-2) to take the lead.

However, the Cougars (3-4) took the lead in the bottom of the frame as Trent Fallon led off with a walk and scored on back to back errors and Robbie Broderick recorded a sacrifice fly.

The Indians had a opportunity to regain the lead with in the top ofthe fourth inning as Noah Burgess was hit by a pitch while Dalton Carmichael and Gazan reached on singles to load the bases but Ethan was able to get out of the jam with an infield fly and a groundout.

In the top of the fifth inning the Indians tied the game at 2-2 as Ryan Dyal reached on a leadoff single and stole second before coming home on a one out double by Bradley Psathas.

The bottom of the frame began in the Indians' favor as starting pitcher Ryan Grifffin retired two of the first three batters and appeared to be out of the inning but Broderick would reach first on a wild pitch after strike three.
Josh Perry reached base for the Cougars that allowed Elliot Schubert to reach home with the lead run.
Cole Eiland replaced Griffin on the mound for the Indians and he was greeted rudely as had an RBI single and Hamilton Schubert followed with a two-run double to five the Cougars a 6-2 lead.
The Indians scored a run with two outs in the top of the sixth inning as Fiscus reached on a walk and came home on a single by Dyal.
The Cougars broke the game open in the bottom of the frame as they scored four runs in the frame.
After a caught stealing led to the first out, Matthew McCleland, Elliot Schubert and Nick Bowie reached on singles that loaded the bases and after an infield error scored two runs,the Cougars closed the scoring on a two-run triple by Blair.
The Indians attempted to rally in the top of the seventh inning as Chris Byers and Psathas reached on consecutive fielding miscues and both eventually scoring but three straight outs would end the game.
