SHARPSBURG-Brandon Dawson pitched a four-hitter and Devin Henry had four RBIs but at a price as the Newnan Cougars gained a split in their three-game Region 3-AAAAAA series Thursday night after a 6-2 victory over the East Coweta Indians.
The Cougars improved to 17-4 overall and regained a tie with the Indians (20-2) for first place in the region at 10-1 with the deciding game at Joe Pope Field scheduled for Friday at 6:00 but it is expected to rain in Newnan and the game could be pushed to Saturday.
Newnan had a chance to have get to Indians starter Austin Bellamy with one out in the top of the second inning as Dawson reached on a walk while Charles Reeves and Rodney Tennie reached on singles to load the bases.
The opportunity for Newnan to get on the scoreboard almost came to nothing as courtesy runner Drew Morris was forced at the plate after a ball hit by Jake Kniedel was hit to Indians first baseman Matthew Meyer who came home with a throw to catcher Austin Jones.
However, the Cougars were able to get on the scoreboard as Reeves scored from third on a passed ball while Tennie and Kniedel advanced a base for Henry who was at the plate when the run scored.
Henry, who is known more for his great speed, delivered with some power as he lined a double to left scoring both Tennie and Kniedel to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
Benefitting from the lead was Dawson who held the Indians in check as he retired the first 11 batters in order until Cole Antmann reached on an infield error in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Indians finally recorded a base hit with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jones doubled to left field and almost had another hit as Travis Williams lined a shot to right field only to be denied by Henry who used his speed to get to the ball.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Cougars added to the lead as Dawson reached first after being hit by a pitch and Tennie followed with a one out double.
Kniedel followed by reaching first on a walk to load the bases then Henry singled to bring home Morris, who was running for Dawson, and Tennie to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead and signal the end of the evening for Bellamy as he was lifted from the game in favor of Bryce Gemmel.
The play also seemed to signal the end of the regular season for Henry who had to assisted from the field after he appeared to injure a hamstring while was running down the first base line.
The Cougars threatened to record a blowout of their own after the 12-1 loss Tuesday night as Will Dreggors hit by a pitch to load the bases but a force play and a groundout ended the threat and left the score at 5-0.
The Indians tried to rally in the bottom ofthe sixth inning as Tim Manning singloed and advanced to second on an infield error.
Gemmel hit into a force play that advanced Manning to third and Antmann followed by hitting a sacrifice fly to left that brought Manning home and get the Indians on the scoreboard.
Gemmel, who took second on the throw from the outfield on the sacrifice fly came home on a single to right field by Jonathan Banks who would steal second with Geremy Walton at the plate.

The Cougars added one more run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning as Reeves reached on a walk and stole second before scoring on a single to left by Tennie.
Dawson, who would record six strikeouts in the game, allowed a single by Jones to start the bottom of the seventh inning giving the Indians hope for a rally.
However, Dawson dashed those hopes as he induced a flyball to right by Williams and a forceplay before retiring Smith on a strikeout to end the game.

Offense, McCurry lead Indians to victory in first game of Cougars series

The East Coweta bats provided the offense with 13 hits while Zack McCurry did his part on the mound  Tuesday at Joe Pope Field as the  Indians defeated the Newnan Cougars 12-1 in the first game of their Region 3-AAAAAA series.
The win improves the overall record to 20-1 and 10-0 in the region for the Indians as they will host the Cougars (16-4, 9-1) Thursday night in Sharpsburg.
McCurry and Cougars starter Thomas Sumner were locked in a scoreless battle through the first three innings of the game when the Indians broke through in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of runs.
Bryce Gemmel led off with a single and advanced to second when a ball hit by Cole Antmann was mishandled before Jonathan Banks hit a bloop single to right field that brought him home.
After Geremy Walton singled to load the bases, Matthew Meyer hit a deep flyball to left field that allowed Antmann to come home with the second run of the inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Cameron Smith led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch before Gemmel singled.
Smith was waved home as he rounded third but a one hop throw from Charles Reeves in left field for the Cougars made it home and catcher Sam Buchanan was able to apply the tag for the out.
On the play,  Gemmel took second and came home with the inning's lone run as Antmann hit a double to left and after a Banks was hit by a pitch, Cougars head coach Kenny Morris lifted Sumner in favor of Beau Shelnutt.
Meanwhile, McCurry was off to another quality start as he allowed one hit through his first four two-third innings on the mound.
He would run into a hiccup in the bottom of the fifth inning after retiring the first two batters of the frame as he hit pinch hitter Justin Groover who scored the lone run of the game as Devin Henry drilled a triple into right center field.
The Indians broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning as they batted around to score six runs and take a 9-1 lead.
With one out, Blake Lorow and Travis Williams reached on consecutive walks prompting the removal of Shelnutt from the mound in favor of Derrick Nelson.
An infield error allowed Tim Manning to reach first and load the bases for Smith who hit a sacrifice fly to center field allowing courtesy runner Graydon Treadwell to score.
A single by Gemmel scored Williams before Antmann followed with a single of his own for Banks who flirted with the long ball earlier when he hit a ball to center field.
Banks made amends with this at bat as he lined a 1-2 offering from Nelson over the left field fence for a grand slam and the lead was 9-1.
The Cougars tried to cut into the margin in the bottom of the inning as Nelson singled and advanced to second on a throwing error that also allowed Jonathan Swenson to reach first.
However, McCurry would pitch around the mistake as he retired Buchanan on strikes and induced flyballs from Brandon Dawson and Reeves to end the inning.
After the two outs in the top of the seventh inning, the Indians added three more runs as Williams reached on a walk and scored on a double by Manning who came home on a single by Smith.
Smith scored the final run of the evening as Gemmel laced a double into left center field to finish the evening by going 4-for-5 at the plate.
After six innings in which he allowed three hits hit a batter while recording four strikeouts, McCurry would be replaced by Meyer on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and the latter managed to end the game by retiring the side in order.

SHARPSBURG-Less than 24 hours after suffering their first loss of the season, the East Coweta Indians recovered Tuesday night as they swept a pair of Region 3-AAAAAA games from the Tri-Cities Bulldogs by identical 10-0 scores.
The doubleheader, necessitated by impending rains in the area later in the week, started approximately 45 minutes late as the Tri-Cities bus was stuck on Interstate 85 while an accident was being cleared by authorities.
Despite the delay, game one starter Zack McCurry was off and running as he retired the first three batters on strikeouts.
After being retired in order in the bottom of the first inning, the Indians took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Jonathan Banks reached on a one out walk, advanced to second when Geremy Walton grounded out to the pitcher and came around to score on a single to left by Matthew Meyer.

With Banks at the plate, Antmann stole second and waltzed home on a double by Banks who would give EC a an 8-0 lead after a single by Meyer.
The lead was more than enough for McCurry who tossed a no-hitter in the six-inning contest and in typical fashion recorded seven strikeouts despite walking a batter and hitting two.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the game would eventually come to a close after one out as Jordan Lewis was hit by a pitch and Stephan Cruver reached on an infield error for Antmann and Banks who had  consecutive RBI singles.
After a break for burgers and hot dogs, the two teams did battle in the nightcap and Austin Bellamy was off to another solid pitching performance as he allowed three hits in five innings of play with nine strikeouts to his credit.
The Indians got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of a pair of errors by the Bulldogs and sending nine batters to the plate.
Williams received an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Manning followed with a two-run double.
Two more runs came home as both Williams and Manning scored as a result of wild pitches.

Patriots end Indians unbeaten streak with 11-run fifth

SHARPSBURG-Hopes for an undefeated season were dashed Monday night as the Northside-Columbus Patriots scored 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat the East Coweta Indians 16-11 in a non-region matchup.
The loss was the first for the Indians after winning 16 straight games to open the 2013 season.
"Baseball is a game that at a high level, you do not go undefeated," commented EC head coach Franklin Deloach. "Now that we have lost our first game it will be interesting to see how we respond and react to it. Hopefully, as a team we will embrace this humble time with the attitude of hard work and striving to get better."
The 1-AAAAA Patriots (14-6) took the first lead of the evening with a run in the top of the second inning but the Indians responded after one out in the bottom of the frame.
Geremy reached on a double, Matthew Meyer followed withg a single and after Austin Jones was hit by a pitch, Travis Williams lined a double off of the center field wall that scored Walton and Meyer.
Grayden Treadwell, who ran for Jones and advanced to third on Williams' double, came home with the third run of the inning when Tim Manning grounded out to shortstop.
The Indians added to the lead in the bottom of the third inning as Bryce Gemmel, Cole Antmann and Jonathan Banks had consecutive singles that accounted for one run then Walton followed with a two-run triple.
Walton came home with the fourth run of the frame on a sacrifice fly to center field by Meyer.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Indians added to what appeared to be a secure lead as they added three more runs as Camerson Smith led off with a walk and advanced to third when Gemmell singled.
Antmann hit a sacrifice fly to score Smith and Banks followed with a two-run blast over the left field fence.
Walton followed with a single and Meyer was hit by a pitch to give the Indians two more baserunners but a diving catch by Cam Hopkins in left field denied Jones an RBI hit.
Hopkins' catch seemed to signal the beginning of the end for the Indians as he led off the top of the fifth inning with an infield single off Meyer who took over on the mound in the top of the fourth.
Taylor Harper and Chad Pigg followed with singles for one run to cut the margin to 10-4.
An errant pickoff attempt at third allowed another run to come home then a single by Chad Sheppard and an infield error allowed another run to come home and all of a sudden the promising lead was down to 10-7.
A pitching change was made but that didn't matter to the Patriots as Vic Ballesteros and Bennett Wilson had RBI singles to cut the margin to a run for Hopkins who hit a two-run double that gave Northside an 11-10 lead.
An RBI single by Harper along with an infield error and a sacrifice fly led to three more runs and a 14-10 lead.
"Baseball can be a funny game," Deloach said about the inning.  It was a little of everything…  good baseball for Northside Columbus, bad baseball on our part and every small break in that inning going against us and for Northside."
The Indians tried to recover in the bottom of the fifth as Williams led off with a walk and a steal of second before eventually scoring after a pair of groundouts to Patriots shortstop Mike Rossi.
The Patriots added two more runs for the final margin as Harper had an RBI double and Pigg hit a sacrifice fly to left.
The Indians will try to get back on the winning track tonight when they host the Tri-Cities Bulldogs in a Region 3-AAAAAA doubleheader in Sharpsburg.

Dawson has another "ho-hum" outing as Cougars defeat Bulldogs to extend winning streak

NEWNAN 7 TRI CITIES 2

Brandon Dawson held the Tri Cities Bulldogs in check Friday night as the Newnan Cougars were 7-1 victors at Joe Pope Field.
Anybody attending a Newnan Cougars baseball game may have exclaimed ho-hum at the end of recent games including Friday night.
Brandon Dawson also provided his own version of ho-hum as he allowed one hit while recording 15 strikeouts in the Cougars 7-1 Region 3-AAAAAA win over the Tri-Cities Bulldogs at Joe Pope Field.
The eighth straight win for Newnan improved the overall ledger to 12-3 and the region mark to 5-0 as they will play Tri Cities on Monday in East Point before starting a three-game series against Westlake ahead of the showdown series against East Coweta.
The game didn't start as Dawson had hoped whe he hit Demario Williams to start the game but a caught stealing, his first strikeout and an overrun of first base on a hit allowed him to avoid any trouble.
The Cougars took the lead in the bottom of the second  inning as Sam Buchanan led off by reaching on a walk, taking second on a passed balland after advancing to third on a groundout would come home courtesy of a two-out double by Rodney Tennie.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Cougars added a run as Devin Henry reached on an infield error and in his own ho-hum fashion, stole second and scored on a one out single to left by Derrick Nelson.
Newnan took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the two out single by Nelson,
The Cougars broke open  the game in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs as Jonny Swenson reached on a one out single advanced to second on an error by Bulldogs pitcher Darvelle Booker and scored on a single to right by Dawson.
A dropped flyball in center field forced courtesy runner Justin Groover at second base, but Buchanan manged to score a run on the play.
Reeves, who reached first on the force play, and Tennie who reached on a walk scored the final Newnan runs of the game as a ball Connor Dunn was misplayed by the Tri-Cities right fielder.
Meanwhile, Dawson was retiring Bulldogs along the way through six innings of work with the strikeout ball as the only other outs recorded during his stint were a groundball to Nelson at second base in the top of the second and a first inning caught stealing along with the overrun.
The only way the Bulldogs could find to reach base was to get hit and on four occassions that happened while three others reached on walks.
No problem for Dawson who had nine swinging strikeouts in his six-inning stint before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Blake Payne opened the top of the seventh inning for the Cougars but would struggle as he hit the first batter and after a strikeout walked the next two and tossed a wild pitch that allowed the only run of the game for the Bulldogs.
Newnan head coach Kenny Morris relieved Payne in favor of Zack Crawford who recorded the second out of the inning as an illadvised stolen base attempt was thwarted as catcher Connor Dunn threw a strike to second.
However, the next two batters reached on walks, but they were left stranded as the Bulldogs rally and the game would come to an end on a flyball to Reeves in left field

More runs were scored in the bottom of the third inning as Meyer and Cruver reached on walks before Tigers starting pitcher Tyler Gaines was removed in favor of Payton Myers who retired the first batter on strikes.

In game one, McCurry and Jay Mann combined on a two-hitter as the Indians broke open a close game in the latter stages to come away with an 11-1 victory while Bellamy allowed one hit over seven innings of a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Indians are now 15-0 overall and 5-0 in the region as the two teams prepare to meet Wednesday evening in Sharpsburg.
The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Smith led off the game with a single, stole second and advanced around the bases on groundouts by Gemmel and Cole Antmann.
The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Connor Maroney was hit by a pitch and eventually scored the tying run on an infield error.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Indians reclaimed the lead in a big way with five runs that gave them a 6-1 cushion.
Geremy Walton reached first on an error, Matthew Meyer walked and Blake Lorow reached on a fielder's choice with Meyer forced out at second.
Walton scored on a bunt single by Travis Williams and courtesy runner Graydon Treadwell would come home on a bases loaded walk to Smith.
Gemmel followed with a two-run double and Antmann completed the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly that brought Smith home.
The five-run cushion was enough for McCurry who retired 16 of his last 18 batters only giving up a walk and a single while retiring 10 batters on strikes.
Meanwhile, the Indians added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning as Smith singled, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error before coming home on a single by Gemmel who would steal second and advance to third before coming home on a wild pitch.
In the top of the seventh inning the Indians added to the margin with three more runs 11-1 lead as Meyer doubled and Lorow singled before leaving in favor of pinch-runners who would score.
Gemmel followed with a two out double and the final run of the game when Jordan Lewis had a two-out single.
After six strong innings, McCurry was relieved by Mann who didn't disappoint as he retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the nightcap, the Indians did most of their damage in the top of the first inning with three runs as Smith singled and Gemmel walked with each stealing a base before coming home on a double by Banks who scored on a single by Walton.
The lead was fine for Bellamy who retired the first nine batters of the contest before giving up a single to Moroney in the bottom of the fourth inning and a walk to the same batter in the bottom of the sixth.
Bellamy would record seven strikeouts on his way to the complete game victory.
The Indians fourth run of the game came when Antmann led off the top of the seventh with a single, a steal of second an advancement of third on a single by Walton before stealing home.

Newnan defeats Tri-Cities in five inning Region 3-AAAAAA game

NEWNAN 10 TRI-CITIES 0

Speedy outfielder Devin Henry looks in at home plate from second base in the bottom of the fifth inning. Henry was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a pair of RBIS in the Cougars' 10-0 win.
Will Dreggors and Devin Henry each had two hits and two runs Tuesday night while Thomas Sumner tossed a one-hitter as the Newnan Cougars defeated the Tri-Cities Bulldogs 10-0 in a Region 3-AAAAAA contest played at Joe Pope Field.
The five-inning victory improved he Cougars' overall record to 11-3 and 4-0 in the region whle the Bulldogs fell to 5-8 and 0-4 as the two teams will face either Thursday in East Point.
Fielding hurt the Bulldogs in the bottom of the first inning as Dreggors reached on a single and Derrick Nelson reached on an inifield error with both scoring on another infield error by Tri-Cities.
Newnan scored a single run in the bottom of the second inning to assume a 3-0 lead as Henry reached on a one out bunt single, stole second and advanced to third before coming home on a wild pitch.
A fielding miscue plagued the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fourth inning after Jake Kniedel and Rodney Tennie led off with consecutive doubles.
Bulldogs starting pitcher Demario Boykins retired the next two batters but was unable to get out of trouble as a line drive to second by Nelson was misplayed and both runners scored to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead.
In the first four innings Boykins allowed four hits, two walks and one earned run while recording four strikeouts but he would show signs of wearing down in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Cougars were able to pull away.
With one out Brandon Dawson was hit by a pitch and Charles Reeves followed with a double before Boykins appeared to leave them stranded as Corey Cox was retired on a flyball to shallow right field.
However, the Bulldogs hurler was not as fortunate with Rodney Tennie who reached on a walk and Henry who followed with a two-run double to right field.
A two-run single by Dreggors gave the Cougars a 9-0 lead and after an errant pickoff throw allowed Dreggors to advance to second, Nelson followed with a single to right that ended the game under the mercy rule.
In his complete game victory, Sumner allowed a walk in the first inning but the runner was caught trying to steal second base and allowed a single in the top ofthe third inning but would leave the runner stranded.

Indians tame Wildcats with nine-run fourth inning

EAST COWETA 15 LOVEJOY 0 (FOUR INNINGS)

SHARPSBURG-The East Coweta Indians did not get off to a solid start Monday Monday against the Lovejoy Wildcats but still took advantage of early errors before getting into a hitting mood in the fourth inning to come away with a 15-0 non-region victory.
The Indians improved to 13-0 with the win as they return to Region 3-AAAAAA play tonight in Douglasville against the Douglas County Tigers in a doubleheader.
The game will be played at North Douglas County High Elementary School which is located at 1630 Dorris Road.
The Wildcats had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard first as they had two runners on base and one out against Indians starter Brandon Ruston but the lefthander managed to get out of trouble as recorded a strikeout and after a walk that loaded the bases was able to induce a flyball to right field.
In the bottom of the frame, the Indians got on the scoreboard unconventionally as Geremy Walton reached on a leadoff single and with one out advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt.
After Austin Jones was hit by a pitch, Travis Williams hit a groundball back to the pitcher but his attempt to get Walton at third on a force play was errant and the first run of the game crossed home plate.
Courtesy runner Jordan Lewis, who advanced to third on the throwing error gave the Indians a 2-0 lead when he scored on a groundout by Tim Manning.
The Indians didn't need a hit in the bottom of third as they added four runs to take a 6-0 thanks to four errors in the field by the Wildcats.

Williams eventually hit a groundball to second but the ball was misplayed and Lewis came home with the final run of the frame.
Meanwhile, Ruston enjoyed the 6-0 lead by getting some innings on the mound and despite struggling some was able to get some help from his defense which was almost flawless in the game.
Overall, Ruston allowed two hits and recorded four strikeouts.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wildcats starter Drew Nicholson was tiring and it showed as the Indians began their assault before he was lifted.
With one out, Gemmel reached on a walk and Cole Antmann reached on a single and Banks followed with an RBI single before Walton unloaded a three-run home run over the left field fence to give the Indians a 9-0 lead and Williamson was replaced by Luis DeJesus.
