Shelton tosses one-hitter for EC in JV game, freshman hold off late Whitewater rally

The East Coweta Indians seemed to have the Whitewater Wildcats’ number Thursday night as they were victorious in the freshman and junior varsity games played Thursday at Sharpsburg.
In the freshman game, the Indians had to hold off a late rally to come away with a 6-4 victory while the junior varsity ended their 2017 season with a 10-0 five-inning win to support the one hit pitching of Nolan Shelton.
The freshman (15-4-1) will end their season Friday night in LaGrange with a game against the Troup County Tigers while the junior varsity won their 10th game in the last dozen to finish with a 14-7 record.
Caleb Cashion adjusts his helmet after his triple in the third
inning of the freshman game. Cashion played in both games
and went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the day.
In the freshman game, the Indians took the lead early as Jonathan Williams led off the bottom of the first inning with a single followed by a stolen base and advanced to third before coming home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Tanner Floyd.
Whitewater tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning but EC came back in the bottom of the frame to reclaim the lead as starting pitcher Caleb Cashion singled, advanced to second on a balk and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a double by Jacob Burgess.
Keegan Rich followed with a walk and Levi Wilson was hit by a pitch to load the bases for JJ Freed who hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Burgess home from third.
An error by the Wildcats shortstop allowed Rich and Wilson to come home and give the Indians a 5-1 lead.
The Indians added one more run to the total in the bottom of the third inning as Cashion reached on a one out triple and came home on a single by Burgess.
However, the game became tight as the Wildcats came back with three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the margin to 6-4 but Evan Fuller entered the game in relief to end the frame and despite having the tying run on second with one out was able to end the game on a groundout to first and flyball to Freed in center field to end the game and earn the save.
Cashion pitched the first two innings for the win.
Nolan Shelton lookls in for a sign by catcher Tanner Floyd
as he faces Zach Lischner. Shelton allowed one single in
five innings.
In the junior varsity contest, both teams were scoreless in the first inning but the Indians took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Bryan Crow reached on a fielder’s choice and stole two bases before coming home on a double to left by Cashion.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Indians added to the lead when Myles Dowell reached on an infield single and moved to third on a single by Trevor Crowdis before scoring on a single to left by Ethan Walker.
The game remained close as neither team scored in the fourth inning but EC would strike in the bottom of the fifth inning with 10 batters going to the plate and eight coming home.
Walker reached on a walk and a pitching change was made by Whitewater before Brayden Carey and Tanner Floyd had consecutive singles to load the bases for Crow.
An infield error allowed Walker and Carey to score to increase the lead to 4-0 and after a pair of outs appeared to get the Wildcats out of the frame, the Indians continued to score.
A bases loaded walk to Crowdis allowed Crow to score and Peyton Ramey made the contest a blowout as he cleared the bases with a double to left field before scoring the final run on a single by Walker.
Walker finished the evening by going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and two RBIs while Crow stole four bases and Holden had a single and two walks.
The beneficiary of the support was Shelton who as denied a no hitter by a fourth inning single by Whitewater starting pitcher Zach Mills.

Run scoring singles by Crowdis, Cougars miscues provide support for Bunn and Ramey in three-hit shutout for Indians

The East Coweta Indians took advantage of miscues early and rode the pitching of Austin Bunn and Peyton Ramey in a 6-0 defeat of the Newnan Cougars in a junior varsity game played Wednesday in Sharpsburg.
With the victory, the Indians won their eighth in 10 games to improve their overall record to 13-7 as they prepare to tentatively close the season Thursday evening at 7:00 if the weather is good.
With one out, Brayden Carey reached on a two base error in the outfield and scored when William Kelley singled and moved to third on another two base error before scoring on a double by Tanner Floyd.
A single by Caleb Cashion moved courtesy runner Nick Holden to third and after the second out of the inning was recorded, Trevor Crowdis singled to left field allowing Holden to score and Cashion to advance to third.
While JJ Freed was at the plate, the Newnan catcher attempted to get Cashion out at third but the throw was errant and Cashion was able to come home with the final run of the frame and give EC a 4-0 lead.
The lead appeared to be enough for Bunn who had one jam as Kyle McDonald reached on error and Woody Waters followed with a single after one out in the top of the third inning.
However, Bunn recovered from the situation as he recorded a strikeout and was able to induce a flyball to Myles Dowell in left field that ended the frame.
Bunn also benefited from some unusual defensive plays like on in the top of the fifth inning as Connor Boylen led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch before trying to advance to third as Tucker Barnett grounded out.
However, EC first baseman Ethan Walker threw back across the infield to third baseman Jeff Sangster and the latter applied the tag to Boylen for the second out of the frame.
The Indians gave Bunn two more runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Dowell walked, stole second and moved to third before Crowdis followed with his second run scoring single of the game.
Crowdis moved to second on a single by Freed and successfully stole third base as the throw went into left field allowing the second baseman to come home with the final run of the game.
After five quality innings in which he surrendered three hits and recorded six strikeouts, Bunn was removed from the game in favor of Ramey who gave the Indians a strong two innings by retiring all six batters he faced.
However, Ramey found two different ways to get through his stint on the mound as he retired the side in the sixth inning on three strikeouts and made it through the seventh with three flyballs as one was caught by Dowell and the other two by Freed.

Dyal, who was denied a home run on ball that went foul in the second inning, hit a 1-2 offering from Lions’ starter Myles Austin fair and deep as it cleared the right field fence for a three-run home run and an 8-0 lead.
The large cushion was gave Frady a margin for error that was not required as he ran a string of 13 straight batters retired before a walk that started the top of the sixth inning.

After the walk, Frady made short work of the Lions as he retired five of six batters on strikeouts that ended the game.

Kenty singled and came around to score the first run on a triple by Jacob Burgess who came home on a one out single by Austin Bunn.
Jonathan Williams was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a double play before coming home on a two-run single by Frady.
The Chiefs rallied in the top of the fifth inning with two runs on a bases loaded walk to Will Wheeler and a fielders choice by losing pitcher Brycon Beccara that cut the Indians’ lead to 6-4.
After the first out in the top of the sixth inning, the Chiefs threatened to tie the game as the next two batters reached on consecutive walk and Jacob Howell was brought into the game to end the threat.
Howell, who had a strong start Monday night in a win over Troup County, came through for EC as he induced a flyball to Levi Wilson in left field and ended th threat by getting a pop fly to DeLoach at second for the third out.
In the top of the seventh, Howell was able to end the game quickly as he retired the first batter on strikes and retired the next two on a pop fly to shortstop and a ground ball to DeLoach at second.

EC scores six in the sixth without a hit, Frady has another dominate outing

The East Coweta Indians took advantage of a sixth inning implosion by the Columbus Blue Devils with all six of their runs in the game to come away with a 6-0 victory in a non-region game played Wednesday in Sharpsburg.
By virtue of the win, the Indians are now 10-2 and will host the LaGrange Grangers in another non-region matchup scheduled for 5:30 in Sharpsburg.
Benefitting from the win was Mason Frady who followed his dominating performance against Alexander last week with an outing almost as good with a three-hitter and 10 strikeouts against the perennial state power.
Frady, who struck out 16 batters last week, started Wednesday game in strong shape with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the first and breezed through the second with three balls hit to center fielder Zack Bruce.
Frady surrendered a single to Jonathan Brand with one out in the top of the fourth, but a double play took him out and ended the frame.
The senior hurler showed what he was made of in the top of the sixth inning as he faced two runners in scoring position after a double and an infield error with nobody out.
A ball was hit to Devonte Brown at shortstop and the senior showed he still had some football skills left from the recent gridiron season as he beat the baserunner to the plate and a toss to Ryan Dyal behind the plate resulted in a tag and an out.
Still faced with runners in scoring position, Frady came back to retire the next two batters on swinging strikeouts and kept the game scoreless.
The bottom of the inning started innocently as Emilio Morales grounded out and Coleman Wood and Nate Gick reached on consecutive walks.
The problems for Columbus began with Cameron Jackson at the plate, a wild pitch moved pinch-runner Trevor Crowdis and Gick moved a base and Jackson eventually loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch.
The Blue Devils appeared to keep the game scoreless as Zack Bruce was retired on an infield fly, but the implosion occurred as Devonte Brown came to the plate.
Another wild pitch came and Crowdis slid home with the winning run and Brown followed by reaching on an error that allowed Gick and Jackson to score and give EC a 3-0 lead.
Trevor Gaddy reached on a walk and was able to move to second on a throwing error that allowed Brown to score and Ryan Dyal followed by reaching on a walk.
Ethan Darrow reached on a walk in which ball four resulted in another wild pitch that allowed Gaddy to score.
The final run of the evening occurred in an unusual fashion as Darrow tried to second but managed to get caught in a rundown.
Brandon Frost, the courtesy runner for Dyal was able to score for the final run before Darrow was retired on a scoring play that several throws before the tag was applied that ended the inning.
In the top of the seventh Frady took care of business with a strikeout and induced a pop to Darrow at second before surrendering a single and ended the game with a swinging strikeout.

THE NEXT GAME: The Grangers will come into Thursday's contest with a 7-5 record after defeating the Newnan Cougars 6-3 at Joe Pope Field.
They broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs and added one more in the top of the seventh.

Eight run second inning keys win for EC over Campbell

An eight run second inning by the East Coweta Indians helped support a solid pitching outing by Coleman Wood in a 15-0 Region 2-AAAAAAA victory over the Campbell Spartans in a contest played Tuesday night in Sharpsburg.
The win, which was completed in four innings was the ninth in a row for the Indians who are now 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the region and will host the Columbus Blue Devils in a non-region game at 5:30.
Devonte Brown started the EC scoring in the bottom of the first inning as he reached on an infield error, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error before coming home when Ryan Dyal grounded out to second.
The scoring continued as Ethan Darrow followed with a triple and scored in front of an inside-the-park home run by Emilio Martinez.
After the first out was recorded in the bottom of the second inning, the scoring barrage began as Nate Gick singled and Zack Bruce followed with a double for Brown who hit a shot off of the left field wall for a two-run double and a 5-0 lead.
Trevor Gaddy was hit by a pitch and with Dyal at the plate, Brown would steal home on the front end of a double steal.
Dyal was also hit by a pitch before Darrow came to the plate and reached on a single that scored Gaddy from third and the lead was 7-0.
Morales threatened to have another inside-the-park home run in his next at bat but had to settle for a triple that allowed Brandon Frost and Darrow to come home.
However, Morales did give the Indians a 10-0 lead as he came on a wild pitch during a strikeout while Trevor Crowdis completed the scoring in the frame for the Indians when he came home on a two out double by Gick.
The Indians took a respite from scoring in the bottom of the third inning but resumed in the bottom of the fourth inning with the four runs that were needed to end the game under the 15-run mercy rule.
Morales completed a stellar evening with a single and Wood was hit by a pitch and Ryan Griffin had an infield single that loaded the bases.
A fielders choice followed with Morales coming home while a force play at second allowed Wood to score and the lead was 13-0.
A single by relief pitcher Avery Reynolds brought Griffin home and Cashion followed by lining a shot to left field for his run scoring double that not only scored Bruce with the final run of the game, but was his first varsity hit.
In the pitching department, Wood was solid in three innings of work as he held the Spartans hitless with Reynolds taking over in the top of the fourth inning and collecting three strikeouts.

THE NEXT GAME: The Columbus Blue Devils will face the Indians in Sharpsburg at 5:30. They will enter the contest with a 5-5 record after 5-2 win over Shaw on Tuesday in a region game. Among common opponents, Columbus has lost to LaGrange (Thursday’s EC opponent) 12-2 and fell to Northgate 5-2. The Blue Devils will face the McIntosh Chiefs next week.

Deloach, Williams lead offense while Howell handles pitching in EC freshmen win

Ashton DeLoach was 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Jonathan Williams had two hits and three RBIs Monday evening to support the pitching of Jacob Howell as the East Coweta Indians defeated the Troup Tigers 13-3 in a freshmen baseball game played in Sharpsburg.
The Indians improved their record for the season to 4-2-1.
Troup took the early lead as EC was guilty of an infield error which led to three runs in the top of the first inning for the former.
However, the lead didn't last long as the Indians rallied in the bottom of the frame with three runs to tie the game.
Williams reached on a leadoff single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice by Quinlan Wiley before coming home with the first run after a single by Howell.
After the second out of the inning, DeLoach doubled to left and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring the tying run on an error in the Tigers’ outfield.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Indians took the lead as Ethan Leonard singled while Kaleb Gardner and Williams reached first on consecutive walks.
Wiley singled to center which allowed Leonard and Gardner to score but Williams was called out at third on a close play.
Wiley took second on the play and was able to score on a single by DeLoach to give EC a 6-3 lead.
The beat went on for the Indians in the bottom of the third as they scored four runs to take a 10-3 advantage.
Jacob Burgess walked, moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt and came home when a sacrifice bunt by Gardner was mishandled and thrown into right field.
Gardner came home when Williams grounded out and Wiley followed with a single and moved around the bases on an error that allowed Howell to reach.
A wild pitch allowed Wiley to score from third and after a walk to Keegan Rich, DeLoach followed with a single that scored Howell with the final run of the frame.
The 10-3 lead was enough for Howell who managed to recover from the struggles of the first inning to retire nine Tigers in a row.
Howell was replaced in the top of the fourth inning by Levi Wilson who walked the first batter but retired the next batter on strikes to end the inning.
In his two and two-third innings, Howell allowed three hits and recorded four strikeouts in getting the win.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Indians scored three runs which would allow them to end the game on the mercy rule.
Burgess led off by reaching on an infield error and stealing second while Leonard reached base on a walk and Gardner recorded a single that loaded the bases.
Williams recorded his second hit of game with a shot to right field that scored Burgess and Leonard and allowed Gardner to reach third.
After a walk to Wiley and a strikeout, Austin Bunn came to the plate as a pinch-hitter and the first pitch hit the ground allowing Gardner to score the final run of the game.

Mason(ry) work yields 27 strikeouts in extra inning win for Indians

The Masons were at their best Thursday night in the 2-1 win
over Alexander. Mason Meyer (left) and Mason Frady
 combined for 27 strikeouts in 12 innings. Frady's 16 K's tied
a single game EC mark set in 2004 by Kyle Bedrosian.
For 12 innings, fans of strong pitching or the work of a masonry would have appreciated the Thursday night non-region encounter between the East Coweta Indians and the Alexander Cougars in Sharpsburg.
However, there has to be some offense and Trevor Gaddy provided that with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning as his single scored Ethan Darrow from second base to provide the Indians with a 2-1 victory.
The win was the seventh in a row for the Indians who will take their 7-2 record to Cobb County Friday afternoon for a Region 2-AAAAAAA game with the Pebblebrook Falcons.
With the game tied at 1-1, Devonte Brown almost provided the heroics for the Indians as he lined a shot to left field, however the play resulted in a loud out as the left fielder took the ball out of the sky.
Ryan Dyal followed with a single but was forced at second as Darrow reached first on a fielder’s choice.
With Gaddy at bat, Darrow stole second and was able to advance to third on an errant pickoff throw and almost came home as the throw to third nearly went into the Indians’ dugout.
Gaddy ended the drama for the Indians as he lined a single into left field for the winning run.
The winning pitcher was Mason Meyer who pitched the extra five frames allowing two hits and recording 11 strikeouts, but the Indians’ other Mason(ry) worker had a dominating seven innings.
effort as Mason Frady allowed two hits and recorded 16 strikeouts.
The 16 strikeout performance by Frady tied a high mark for an East Coweta Indian in a single game as Kyle Bedrosian tossed the same number in a 4-2 victory over the Newnan Cougars on Friday March 26, 2004 in Sharpsburg.
After the first batter of the game for Alexander reached on an error, Frady may have shown panic as he promptly retired 13 in a row with 10 via the strikeout route.
The only time Frady found himself in trouble was in the top of the fifth inning when he allowed a one out single which was followed by an infield error.
However, Frady recovered by recording two strikeouts to end the frame and retired the next six batters.
In the top of the seventh, Frady met with a slight problem as a line drive off the bat of Zach Smith went of the pitcher’s leg and rolled to third.
After tossing a couple of warmup pitches, Frady went back to work and retired the next two batters on...strikeouts.
That spelled the end of the night for Frady who would turn the game over to Meyer who started his stint with a strikeout as he breezed through the top of the eighth.
In the latter stages of the game, the Indians had opportunities to get the run needed for victory but Cougar hurlers had the big pitch when needed and the game would remain scoreless until the top of the 11th inning.
After Meyer retired the first batter on a strikeout, he allowed two consecutive singles and appeared to avoid further trouble but an infield error followed and the Cougars took the lead with the first run of the game.
The Indians responded in the bottom of the frame as Coleman Wood reached on a one out single and Ryan Griffin was sent into the game as a pinch-runner.
Griffin moved to second after a two out walk to Nate Gick and advanced to third on a passed ball before coming home on a wild pitch with the tying run.
In the top of the 12th inning, the defensive play of the night that wasn’t a strikeout came courtesy of a play by Brown at shortstop as he leaped in the air to catch a line drive off the bat of the Cougars’ Gavon Harmon.
An infield error followed but Meyer had enough left in his tank to retire the next two batters on consecutive called third strikes to reach 11.

The Indians added to the scoring total in the bottom of the fourth as Ethan Darrow walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and after moving to third on a flyball by Cameron Jackson came home on a wild pitch.
After the flyball out by Jackson, Zack Bruce was hit by a pitch and eventually came around to score on a single to left field by Wood.
The Indians were held scoreless in the bottom of the fifth but added to the 4-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs.
With one out, Ryan Griffin walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a groundout.
Wood followed with a double that scored Griffin and Trevor Crowdis was sent into the game to run for the former and he would score on a single by Brandon Frost who advanced to second on an error in the outfield.
The final run of the game came when Gick reached on an error by the Tigers’ left fielder and Frost was able to come home.
As for the Indians’ pitching, Rodgers was in control during his stint as the only two hits were allowed in the first inning and retired the next 14 batters he faced and after a batter reached on an error, that player was picked off and the hurler ended his stint with his sixth strikeout.
Calvin Boyd took over in the top of the seventh inning and allowed the only run the Tigers scored for the evening.
The Indians next contest will be at home Thursday evening at 5:55 when they host the Alexander Cougars who will enter the game with a 4-2 record.
