Newnan defeats Tri-Cities in five inning Region 3-AAAAAA game

NEWNAN 10 TRI-CITIES 0

Speedy outfielder Devin Henry looks in at home plate from second base in the bottom of the fifth inning. Henry was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a pair of RBIS in the Cougars' 10-0 win.
Will Dreggors and Devin Henry each had two hits and two runs Tuesday night while Thomas Sumner tossed a one-hitter as the Newnan Cougars defeated the Tri-Cities Bulldogs 10-0 in a Region 3-AAAAAA contest played at Joe Pope Field.
The five-inning victory improved he Cougars' overall record to 11-3 and 4-0 in the region whle the Bulldogs fell to 5-8 and 0-4 as the two teams will face either Thursday in East Point.
Fielding hurt the Bulldogs in the bottom of the first inning as Dreggors reached on a single and Derrick Nelson reached on an inifield error with both scoring on another infield error by Tri-Cities.
Newnan scored a single run in the bottom of the second inning to assume a 3-0 lead as Henry reached on a one out bunt single, stole second and advanced to third before coming home on a wild pitch.
A fielding miscue plagued the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fourth inning after Jake Kniedel and Rodney Tennie led off with consecutive doubles.
Bulldogs starting pitcher Demario Boykins retired the next two batters but was unable to get out of trouble as a line drive to second by Nelson was misplayed and both runners scored to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead.
In the first four innings Boykins allowed four hits, two walks and one earned run while recording four strikeouts but he would show signs of wearing down in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Cougars were able to pull away.
With one out Brandon Dawson was hit by a pitch and Charles Reeves followed with a double before Boykins appeared to leave them stranded as Corey Cox was retired on a flyball to shallow right field.
However, the Bulldogs hurler was not as fortunate with Rodney Tennie who reached on a walk and Henry who followed with a two-run double to right field.
A two-run single by Dreggors gave the Cougars a 9-0 lead and after an errant pickoff throw allowed Dreggors to advance to second, Nelson followed with a single to right that ended the game under the mercy rule.
In his complete game victory, Sumner allowed a walk in the first inning but the runner was caught trying to steal second base and allowed a single in the top ofthe third inning but would leave the runner stranded.
Sumner also recorded seven strikeouts in the game with 12 first pitch strikes to the 15 batters he faced in the game.
