SHARPSBURG-After several attempts, Kayliah Matthews was able to go yard Tuesday evening as her grand slam was part of a five-run first inning as the East Coweta Lady Indians defeated the Newnan Lady Cougars 15-0 in a three inning junior varsity contest.
The win improved the overall mark to 13-0 on the season for the Lady Indians and extended their unbeaten streak to 30 games.
The scoring started in the bottom of the first inning as Jayliah Holmes was hit by a pitch and after a walk by Bailee Echols, Katie Taylor and Macie Wiggins were hit by pitches to score a run.
After a force play, Matthews got the pitch she was looking for as she drilled the first pitch offered over the right field fence for a grand slam and a 5-0 Lady Indians lead.
The lead increased to 7-0 in the bottom of the second as Eliza Kuhne singled, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before coming home on a double by Echols who would come home on a double by Taylor.
The Lady Indians did the most damage in the bottom of the third inning as 11 batters went to the plate with eight runners coming home.
Hits by Matthews, Kip Heggood, Karlie Guiterrez, Kuhne and Holmes accounted for runs and after a walk to Echols and a hit by pitch for Taylor, Wiggins had a two-run single.
The game would end under the mercy rule as White had an RBI double, Matthews reached on an intentional walk and Heggood had a run scoring single.
Taylor Biegle was the winning pitcher and gave the Lady Indians three dominating innings by retiring all nine Lady Cougar batters in the game.
The Lady Indians will take to the field on Monday when they venture into Fayette County for a matchup with the Starr's Mill Lady Panthers.
NOTE: The varsity contest between EC and Newnan was called off after a rainstorm visited in the bottom of the first inning.
Kelley Lynch surrendered a bunt single to KK Madrey to start the game but she was stranded at second as Lynch retired the next three batters on swinging strikeouts.
Lilly Agan had a 2-0 count in the bottom of the frame against Ansley Houston when the rain got hard and play was stopped.
The two teams will attempt to play the Region 2-AAAAAAA contest Wednesday at 5:00. Streamcity.org is planning to broadcast the game online.
The contests at Heard County will be rescheduled for a later date.
