JJ Freed allowed two
hits over five innings and recorded five strikeouts while several
players scored two runs to lead the East Coweta Indians to an 11-1
victory over the Sandy Creek Patriots in a junior varsity game played
Friday in Sharpsburg.
The victory for the
Indians improved their record to 7-5 in a game that was called with
one out in the bottom of the fifth inning under the mercy rule.
The Indians took the
lead with one out in the bottom of the first inning as Freed, Peyton
Ramey and Ethan Walker had consecutive singles that led to a run.
In the bottom of the
second inning, the EC lead increased as Jordan Kenty reached on a
walk and courtesy runner Myles Dowell stole two bases before coming
home on a throwing error.
Daniel Smith and
Logan Frady also received free passes and Freed aided his own cause
when he grounded out to third and Smith came home.
On the play, a
throwing error by the Patriots’ first baseman allowed Frady to
score from third base and the advantage was 4-0.
Freed lost his
chance at a shutout as Sandy Creek scored an unearned run in the top
of the third inning but got the run back plus three more to take an
8-1 cushion.
With one out, Walker
reached on a walk, William Kelley and Kenty singled to load the bases
for Nick Holden who drilled a pitch over the center fielder to clean
the bases and reach third on a triple and eventually score on an
infield error.
The Indians added a
run with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning as Walker reached
on a fielders choice and after two walks loaded the bases, would
eventually come home on a wild pitch.
The Indians had a
chance to add to the lead in the frame but consecutive strikeouts
left the two runners on base and Freed took a 9-1 lead into the top
of the fifth inning where he breezed through the frame with a
strikeout and two groundouts.
In the bottom of the
fifth inning, the Indians put the game away as Smith walked and Frady
singled to bring Freed to the plate.
A wild pitch was
thrown which allowed Smith to score from third and Frady to advance
to third and after Freed reached first on a wild pitch thrown during
a strikeout, Ramey ended the contest with a sacrifice fly to left
field.
