Quinlan Wiley had
one of those days for the East Coweta Indians as they swept a
freshman doubleheader Saturday in Sharpsburg.
Wiley pitched two
and two-third innings of relief, reached base eight times, scored
twice, stole a base and recorded two RBIs in two games.
He also singled
Kaleb Gardner from third with the winning run in the bottom of the
eighth inning to give the Indians a 12-11 come-from-behind win over
the Whitewater Wildcats in the second game.
The Indians improved
to 12-4-1 with the sweep that included a 9-4 win in the earlier
contest.
Gardner led off the
bottom of the eighth inning by lining a double to left field and
advancing to third on a single by Jonathan Williams who eventually
stole second while Wiley was at bat.
The winning hit came
as Wiley hit an 0-1 offering into left field for the RBI that also
made him the winning pitcher in relief.
The game didn’t
get off to solid start for EC as Whitewater scored twice in the top
of the first inning but the former managed to get on the scoreboard
in the bottom of the frame.
Williams singled and went to second on a throwing error before coming home after a pair of groundouts.

In the top of the
second inning, the lead increased to 7-1 as the Wildcats scored five
runs but the Indians responded in the bottom of the frame as they
score four times to cut the deficit to 7-5.
Jacob Howell led off
with a walk and stole second before scoring on a single right by
Keegan Rich who moved to second on a single by Evan Fuller.
A throwing error
allowed both to move into scoring position and each were able to
score as Ethan Leonard drilled a shot into right field for a triple.
Fuller scored the
final run of the inning on a single to right field by Leonard.
The Wildcats scored
a run in the top of the fourth inning as reliever Cam Hill singled
and eventually scored on a double play and took an 11-5 lead after
scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
After missed scoring
opportunities in third and fourth innings, the Indians scored a pair
of runs to cut the margin to 11-7.
Fuller singled and
after courtesy runner Logan Frady moved to second on a throwing
error, Gardner picked up an RBI with a one out single and eventually
scored on a single by Wiley.
The comeback was
almost complete in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scored
four runs to tie the game at 11-11.
Gardner, who went
4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs, led off with a single and moved
around to third on a throwing error before scoring on a sacrifice fly
by Williams.
Wiley, who had a
3-for-5 game with two RBIs, singled and moved to third on a double by
Frady and after a walk to Ashton DeLoach both would score on wild
pitches thrown by the Wildcats.
After a walk to
Austin Bunn, Fuller had a fielder’s choice that forced Bunn but
allowed DeLoach to come home with the tying run.
Wiley set up his own
game winning heroics in the top of the eighth inning by retiring a
pair of batters after a baserunner was caught stealing second.
In the opener of
the doubleheader, Whitewater took an early 1-0 lead with a run in
the top of the first inning but EC took control of the game in the
bottom of the second inning with a six-run frame.
DeLoach singled and
starting pitcher Jacob Howell reached on an error and after a
sacrifice bunt by Jacob Burgess, Rich followed with a two-run triple.
Rich scored on a two
out single by Fuller who would score on an outfield error that
allowed Williams to reach base and eventually score on a double by
Wiley who accounted for the final run on a single by Frady.
The Wildcats cut
into the 6-1 lead with a run in the top of the third inning but the
Indians reclaimed the run in the bottom of the frame as Burgess
scored on a throwing error.
Whitewater scored
twice in the top of the fourth inning to cut the EC lead to 7-4, but
the Indians responded with a pair in the bottom of the stanza as
Fuller reached on a one out single, stole second and moved to third
on a bunt single by Williams who stole second.
Wiley reached on a
walk that loaded the bases and Frady was hit by a pitch that brought
Fuller home and DeLoach followed with a single that brought Williams
home with the final run of the game.
Howell pitched the
first three and one-third innings before turning the game over to
Burgess who threw one pitch in the top of the fourth inning before
needing a few more in the top of the fifth inning to record the save.
Next for the Indians
will be a matchup at home on Tuesday against the McIntosh Chiefs
before games against Newnan, Whitewater and Troup County to close the
season.
