SHARPSBURG-When the East Coweta Lady Indians face the Westlake Lady Lions in fastpitch softball, the two teams ordinarily battle for at five innings before the former has an inning that determines the outcome.
That was not the case Tuesday evening as an 11-run inning which featured a Kelley Lynch grand slam led to a 14-0 four-inning voctory in the Region 2-7A opener for the two schools.
The Lady Indians improved to 8-0 on the season as they will face the Alexander Lady Cougars in a non-region contest with the junior varsity squads meeting at 5:00 and the varsity at 7:00.
In the top of the first inning, the Lady Lions (2-4, 0-1) threatened to score first as Tyauna Statum reached on a one out walk Zaquai Dumas reac hed on an error and after a groundout starting pitcher Zamiyah Williams reached on a fielder’s choice that loaded the bases.
However, Lady Indians starting pitcher Aniston
Wright recovered and left the bases loaded as she retired Hannah Williams on a swinging strikeout.
The Lady Indians mad some of their opportunities count as they scored three times in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead.
Lilly Agan doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Davis before recording the first tally on a wild pitch.
The wild pitch also allowed Kelley Lynch to advance to second after she reached base on a walk.
Lynch moved to third on a single by Ashlynn Gunter who took second on a throw home.
Wright aided her own cause with a sacrifice fly to score Lynch and Hanna Miller singled to left for an RBI as Gunter crossed home plate.
Wright had an easier top of the second with a pair of strikeouts and a line drive catch to allow her teammates to give her a larger lead.
She got that larger lead as 16 batters went to the plate in the bottom of the frame that resulted in 11 runs and the emptying of the bench.
After two walks and a single by Carmen Prior, Lynch put the game out of reach as she drilled a shot to left center field that became a grand slam and a 7-0 lead.
A groundout followed, but hits kept coming as Caroline Lively had a two-run single, Prior had an RBI single, Madison Lecuona had a sacrifice fly for an RBI while Ansley Duffey and Caison Byars had RBI singles.
Kylie Ferguson took over on the pitching rubber in relief of Wright and the freshman llowed one hit while recording two strikeouts in the two frames she worked.
