SHARPSBURG-Ashlynn
and Ansley Gunter had a three of a kind hand as they combined for
three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs Wednesday night as the
East Coweta Lady Indians defeated the Northgate Lady Indians 10-1.
The game was called
in the bottom of the sixth inning and was part of the Georgia Dugout
Club Tournament.
After Lady Indians
starter Rachel Vaughan retired the Lady Vikings in order in the top
of the first inning, her teammates gave her a lead after the first
two batters were retired.
Kelley Lynch and
Ashlynn Gunter reached on singles and after Vaughan reached on a
walk, Hanna Miller followed with a two run single to left field while
an RBI single by Caroline Lively accounted for the third and final
run of the frame.
The score remained
3-0 until the top of the third inning as Audrey Baxter reached on a
leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to
third on a single by Ashley Kent before scoring on a ground ball hit
by Charla Echols.
Northgate (2-1)
threatened to possibly tie the game with one out in the top of the
fourth inning as starting pitcher Alissa Bolinger and Natalie Heath
but the Vaughan caught a break as Liz Sebastian had a single hit
Heath and the latter was called out.
Baxter followed with
a single left and courtesy runner Madison Maxey nearly scored but
left fielder Caison Byars through a strike to the plate and Maxey was
tagged out by Lively to end the frame.
In the bottom of the
frame, EC (3-0) was able to collect on their scoring opportunity as they
scored three times to take a 6-1 lead.
Carmen Prior led off
the frame by reaching on a triple and scoring on the second of two
doubles by Emily Agan and Bolinger was removed in favor of Sasha
Moraweitz.
A groundout by
Olivia Davis moved Agan to third and Lynch followed by drilling a 1-1
pitch over the fence for a two-run home run.
After four innings
on the pitching rubber, Vaughan was replaced by Lynch and the latter
followed a 14-strikeout performance against Hillgrove last Friday
with a two-hit six strikeout outing against Northgate.
In the bottom of the
sixth inning, EC was able to put the game away as Lynch reached on a
two-base error in the outfield and Ashlynn Gunter followed with a run
scoring single to give the Lady Indians a 7-1 lead.
After one out,
freshman Olivia Cook flirted with her first varsity home run for the
second time in a week as she drilled a shot off the left center fence
but had to settle for an RBI double.
The double gave
another player a chance for their first varsity home run as Ansley
Gunter came to the plate with two outs.
The sophomore
responded by drilling a pitch over the fence for a two-run home run
that ended the game.
The two teams will
resume play in the GDC event on Friday as EC will face Richmond Hill
at 5:00 while Northgate will face Columbus at 8:30 on the Lady
Indians’ field.
