Warren, Lynch, Vaughn lead the way to win over Union Grove for East Coweta

SHARPSBURG-Lindsay “Lulu” Warren and Kelley Lynch each recorded two hits while Rachel Vaughn allowed one hit on the pitching rubber as the East Coweta Lady Indians defeated the Union Grove Lady Wolverines 8-0 in a five-inning varsity softball contest played Wednesday night.
The Lady Indians, who clinched the top seed in Region 2-AAAAAAA Tuesday evening after a 3-1 win over the Newnan Lady Cougars, improved to 14-2 on the season while the Lady Wolverines fell to 10-9.
The damage was done in the bottom of the first inning as Olivia Davis and Warren led off with singles and a throwing error allowed Davis to score and Warren was awarded third.
After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Indians added to the total in the bottom of the third inning as Warren lined a one out double and advanced to third base on a single by Lynch before coming home on a sacrifice fly to left by Vaughn.
The Lady Indians broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning as Ashlynn Gunter reached on an error by the left fielder and advanced to third on a double by Hanna Miller.
Consecutive walks to Caroline Lively and Carmen Prior brought Gunter plateward and after Miller was tagged out while trying to score on a wild pitch, Caison Byars was able to score on a wild pitch to give EC a 5-0 lead.
Warren reached on a walk and Lynch followed a two run single while Vaughn closed the scoring with a double to left field that brought Lynch home from first.
Meanwhile, Vaughn took care of business on the pitching as she allowed a third inning single to Emily Coltharp.
In the top of the fifth inning, Union Grove tried to rally as they had the bases loaded with one out after a trio of walks.
However, Vaughn recovered to retire the next batter on a flyball to Warren in center field who threw a strike to the plate to prevent a run from scoring and the third out was recorded on a line drive to Davis at second.
The Lady Indians will begin a long stretch of games next Tuesday when they travel to Cobb County for the region finale against Wheeler and will complete the gauntlet next Saturday in Gwinnett County as part of the GHS (formerly Brookwood) Tournament.
The first day of the tournament will be at Shiloh High School while the second day will be played at Parkview.
